363.0. "Sheet-to-Tiller Self-Steering" by LEHIGH::GREEN () Fri Jul 18 1986 14:38

    Cape Dory Typhoon

    I am a new owner (second year) of a Typhoon. This is my first boat
    and have some anxiety about adding a lot of stuff to it or making
    modification.

    But I would like to know how to make it self-steer using a sheet
    to tiller arrangement. Has anybody seen that done on this particular
    boat? and how is it laid out?

    thanks.

Describing how to make sheet-to-tiller steering work would take a book.
Fortunately, John Letcher has written a excellent book -- Self-Steering
... (I don't remember the rest of the title) -- that covers
sheet-to-tiller steering in great detail. Depending on the point of
sail, either the mainsheet or a jib sheet is used. I was able to make a
fin keel C&C 26 self-steer this way fairly well. A lot of fiddling is
necessary, and course and wind changes are a bother. However, this form
of self-steering is cheap!

363.2Books on self steeringPRISM::GARDINERWed Jul 23 1986 17:1516
    I have a couple of books that describe in detail how to use self
    steering effectively. The book that Alan mentioned is "Self Steering
    for Sailing Craft". It has all methods that you can imagine, including
    sheet to tiller. I also have a book entitled "Wind-Vane Self Steering
    - How to design and build your own". If you really enjoy adventure
    stories, the book by Joshua Slocum, "Sailing alone around the world",
    gives a good general description of sheet-to-tiller and other methods
    as well as some pretty hair raising experiences.

    I would be willing to part with these books for a nominal fee if
    you want them. I have purchased a commercial wind vane this year
    and find them of no use anymore.

    Ron,

    I have Slocum's book at home if you want to borrow it and the
    Bedford Library doesn't have it.
