293.0. "Old holes, what to do with them?" by SUMMIT::THOMAS (Ed Thomas) Thu May 01 1986 13:46

Once upon a time Zendia (our Boat, BTW does anyone have any idea
what the word "zendia" represents? Name? Place?), was equipped
with a marine head. The marine head was replaced by a full-function
    (:-)) porta-potti (sp?) Now I'm looking at a couple of non-functioning
holes in the bottom that I'm thinking might make sense to to fill.

I'd like opinions on 1) to fill or not to fill the holes and and
on 2) the method used to fill.

If the holes are filled it'll be done as follows:
    a. remove present fittings - one has gate valve, one has sea cock
    b. remove paint from inside of hull around openings
    c. put epoxy-saturated tape or roving over inside of holes
    d. fill holes with epoxy/chopped fiber putty
    e. cover outside of holes with epoxy saturated tape
(I don't think I'd really need this. Please opine).

Remember the only dumb opinion is the one you don't express!!

Ok, you're on the right track. I'd suggest grinding a wide bevel (at
least 3/4") on the hole from the inside, taping a piece of stiff
cardboard over the hole from the outside, and then filling the hole with
alternate layers of cloth (say 10 oz) and matt (1.5 oz) from the inside.
The final layers of matt and cloth should overlap the (no longer there) hole
by several inches. Putty or whatever isn't very strong, and you want the
maximum possible surface area to glue to.

I'd be even happier if I were leaving for a year of cruising :-)
