231.0. "Compass Bulkhead Mounting" by ASGMKA::HARDY () Tue Feb 11 1986 12:35

Last summer I bought a Ritchie 2000 "Navigator" compass and installed it
on our Catalina 27. The bulkhead on a Catalina is angled about 15 degrees
and the "Navigator" compass must be mounted vertically. So I made a round
teak wedge (diameter = 7.5")... like so...

      bulkhead \ wedge
                  \_______
                   \ 2" | |
                    \ | |
                7.5" \ | |compass
                      \ | |
                       \|-
                        \
                         \

Picky boatowner that I am... I don't like it. Has anyone ever installed
the Ritchie 2000 on an angled bulkhead? If so, how? Does anyone know of
a place where I can get a round (7.5" diameter), white fiberglass compass
base (ha, ha, right?). I called Ritchie. They said, "make one"! (Good idea,
Ritchie!!!)

Thanks in advance,

Gary H...

I've got some material from a company that makes a lot of plastic add-on
sort of things. I'll try to find it and check. I recall seeing different
types of instrument pods and hoods but nothing like a circular wedge shape.
the company's name is something like, "Yachting Specialties".

Have you considered spraying the wedge with epoxy and then painting it with
one of the two-part polymer paints? Can you get spray-on epoxy? This may
be a very dumb suggestion!! :-)

The compass gimbels have to be horizontal and vertical. I know of only
one compass (not a really good one and out of production maybe) that
allows the gimbels to be moved to compensate for a sloping bulkhead. All
other compasses need to be either vertical or horizontal.

Personally, I like my varnished compass mounting block. Revarnishing it
every winter reminds me not to get stupid and varnish all of the teak on
deck. Painting or epoxy coating your teak wedge would work just fine, I
would think.
