1217.0. "cleaning oil bilges?" by FCCVDE::REINE () Tue May 23 1989 23:29

Does anyone know or practice an environmentally sound way of
depositing oily bilge water? I was thinking of mixing it in
a good solution of Ivory Soap to break it up first, but what
to do after that I don't know. Gas stations will only take it
if it's pure oil. Have any ideas?

I use Dawn rather than Ivory. Much better in breaking down the oil.

I then bailed out my bilge and then deposited the mess in the container
    provided by the marina.

I then scrubbed the bilge with Dawn and water and pumped overboard.
No oil was seen in the water.

Dawn got some great free publicity recently when the head of one of the
animal rescue operations up there in Alaska, working to remove Exxon's
crude gesture to the environment, said that she'd tried them all, and Dawn
was clearly superior in dissolving the oil on otters and birds.

Now *that's* a real test!

From what I hear Dawn is also the standard additive for bilges by Maine Lobster
men. Not that they are particularly famous for keeping clean bilges, but it
does keep the oil slick under control.

DAWN is a liquid detergent advertised as a dish washing product.

        Which in fact it is.

Is Dawn that good? The bilges on our boat are stinking so much it makes
me retch to go below. You can imagine what it does to one in a blow.
Are the specifically-named bilge cleaners for sale merely Dawn with a
marine price tag? I need stuff that will get rid of the awful smell.

bilge cleaners are way stronger than Dawn. I highly recommend letting
a good one slosh around in your bilge for a day and then flush it out
    with lots of fresh water.

It has been a while since this topic has been addressed.

On my list for fall, is a good cleaning of my bilge. In my case,
this means a 9"x9" bottomless pit (about 30"). Time to pratice my
hand stands.

So the three part question is:

1. How do the environmentally correct clean their bilges? Does the
yard where I winter my boat accept bilge slop? Is Dawn still one of
the best choices?

2. What do the enviromentally chanllenged do to clean their bilges in
the face of the Enviromental Police? Fill the bilge with dawn, sail
for a day out and alone, add water and pump in the dark as you return
home?

3. Completely neutral, once the bilge is clean, what sort of paint
or other coating should I line this sucker with? It will be colored
white. The enviroment aside, I want to see the bad news in the bilge
water. I will probably also use this coating under the engine for
the same reason.

Essentially the bowels of Holiday II are in for a past due good
cleaning. Hopefully the other maintenance means that I can keep on
top of things and never need to do the "Big Clean" again.
