1203.0. "Boat Names????" by FSHQA1::EWINDISCH () Wed May 10 1989 18:50

Ahoy sea dogs! First time boat buyer needs your help finding the
perfect name for newly purchased sailboat. The boat.... 25' 1981 Cape
Dory ,moored in Allen Harbor, North Kingstown (Quonset Pt.
Narragansett Bay) R.I. The owner.... Ed Windisch, 38yr bachelor, 19yr
DECie (USFS), moored in Ashland Mass. Have spent the last 2 months
researching, looking, buying, prepping, moving the boat etc... Now I'm
almost ready for sailing. The only thing left is to name her. I have
been given some suggestions from friends but nothing seemed fitting.
Any suggestions??

Try a tacky family name like:
ROMA-PEDABA after parents Robert and Marge and the little lovelies,
    	Peter, David, and Barbara
ANROJI just the kids this time Andrew, Robbie, and Jill
They both sound like social afflictions.
    Or go cutsie....
BARRY'S CUDA your name has to be Barry (first or last) and you
also have to paint teeth on the bow
BOATIE BOAT the owner's of this fine yacht had a dog named Muttie
    	Mutt

I've always liked THUNDER CHICKEN and PRIDE OF KOOKAMUNGA but I
wonder how seriously I'd communicate with her in a bad situation.
I don't believe in searching for a name. It will happen and you'll
    know that it's right.

Because "wind" appears in your name, perhaps you should think
    about a play on words.

    Maybe: Fair Windisch
           South Windisch
           Pray for Windisch

Some lame examples I guess, but as .1 said when you find the right
    name you'll know it.

I even put in an S.O.S. to my husband @ Codex for this one. How
    about:

                FairWinds
                Windblown
Windward (may be too confusing when using nautical terms
while sailing though or if you were in the West Indies)
                Bay Wind
Windsong (if you're into KARR or any other good tunes)
                Wind Dancer
                Smooth Winds
                Safe Winds
                Windswept
Deck Winds or after 19 yrs. here maybe DEC Winds
Wind Sprint (if you're into racing)
                Wind Sprite
Windbag (not to complimentary for a bachelor!)
                Windblown
                Windfall (denotes good fortune)
Windjammer (back to music--if you're into "good jammin',
    mon"
There are books in stores, not just in a chandlery's or marina.
I'm a new noter in #1199. Choosing ours for our O'Day 27' was
easy--"Gail Warnings"! Work in MRO3; living in Framingham; boat

Cant resist adding this story- I think I read it in Yachting or somesuch mag,
abouyt 15 years ago. Seems a fellow was having a boat built by Choy Lee in Hong
Kong. At some point he was sent a blueprint, onto which he was supposed to write
in things like color of cushions, cabin trim, etc. One item was to fill in the
name- since he hadn't yet decided on a name he wrote LEAVE BLANK on the print.

It was delivered nicely gold leafed on the transom, and he kept the name.

Well, you could name it "East Wind", and you'd have the same initials.

If you're a Grateful Dead fan you could name it "Sugar Magnolia" or
    "Terrapin" (just kiddin').

I always thought "Romantic Warrior" would be a good name for a boat
(after one of my favorite pieces of music) or "Valkyrie" (after another
    famous piece of music).

Or you could go with the "Sea" theme, a la "Phanta-Sea" or "Passing

1203.33another viewMSCSSE::BERENSAlan BerensFri May 12 1989 20:3124
A contrary view:

Boat names that are word plays (like many so far suggested) or cute
references to the owner's profession (like many so far suggested) are, I
think, initially funny but not names I much like or would choose for my
boat.

I like boat names that refer in some way to nature (First Light,
Northern Star, Seal, Warm Rain, Flying Cloud, Running Tide, Wavemusic,
Moonshadow, Artic Tern, Windward Passage) or in some way to the delight,
pleasure, and adventure of sailing (Freedom, Independence, Whisper,
Running Free, Romance) or have a romantic flavor (Myth of Malham,
Maid of Kent, Woodwind, Fantasy, Illusion) or somehow be expressive of
the owner's life and philosophy (Wanderer, Outward Bound, Second Life).

I like names with a euphonious and gentle ring to them, names that are
easily understood on the radio, are not too long, are pronounceable, and
though uniqueness is nice it is not essential. A name should not offend
anyone (in any language or in any place) nor should it be a name that is
laughed at. Tacky names are everywhere, delightful names unfortunately
aren't.

Like I said, a contrary view.

1203.34XCUSME::JOHNSENSat May 13 1989 00:5812
I saw a documentary about the Cherokee Indians a few years back.
The very last scene had a rather old man lamenting the demise
of his tribe. The last thing he said was "A Cherokee never says
goodbye, he says SKA YEW". (I'm not sure of the spelling), which means
"Be Strong". As soon as I trade my Hobie for something bigger I'm
    going to name her that.

I figure that someone at the capitol of the Cherokee Nation in
Talequah Ok. could provide a spelling.

    RE .33

Goes to show, one's person's "tacky" is another person's "delight".
Personally, I'd never name a boat "Arctic Tern" or "Maid of Kent".
I don't think finding a name with a little humor or word play is tacky
in the least. Contrary views are the spice of conversation. But is it
necessary to refer to other people's ideas as "tacky"? Perhaps there's
a valid reason why there are so few boats out there with names you'd
find "delightful". Good taste is so damn subjective, you know.

1203.37ah, steeped in tradition!CDR::SPENCERJohn SpencerMon May 15 1989 12:5921
re: .33,

Well, as a sea-going romantic myself, I also tend to agree with Alan's
feelings. But there is some tradition behind it all.

Boats used for personal pleasure were always yachts, and yachts (all
boats, for that matter) were *always* feminine, and referred to without
exception as "she" or "her". Accordingly, names were intended to be
consistent with this view (for some, now an arcane view.)

One's perspective (even mine) changes when a boat becomes an "it" rather
than a "she". Today, most boatowners look upon their craft as an "it", as
I think some designs and construction well befits ;-). And an it can
tolerate a much cutesier name, even a bald pun, I suppose, without being
so out of place or sounding inappropriate.

My grandfather's lessons are destined to stay with me; I'll always sail
"her".

When I told people I was buying a wooden boat, I got all sorts of
admonishment. Since I "sailed against their wind", and since I've had
nothing but fun (well, SOME frustration) rebuilding her, and since she
was designed as a racer, I thought I would name her:

So - JCR had to pull a "Stink Pot" Joke ---
The only reason he doesn't include the name of his vessel is
he needs to check the transom for spelling first :>)
    -----------

Be sure not to pick a name so cute that it is un-pronouncable in
    an emergency (ex a MAYDAY......)

My "Stink Pot" is the "Phanta Sea" as I hope it counjures up an

I like to see romantic names on wooden boats. Wooden boats are
alive to me, it seems right to call them 'she'.

On the other hand, I have trouble getting romantic about a big piece

Hi, I was back in .03. Believe it or not, I keep thinking of a
name for you, Ed. Even asked my neighbor (has a Contessa or is
it Contest? 25'). How about Winded (as in out of breathe) or spell
it Wind-Ed. Don't know if I mentioned "Unwind" as in relax in .03.
I want to rename our friend's dinghy that we're buying. It's now
"Tender Behind". However, it seems when we sought out marinas
everything was a 2 hour drive from Framingham--I think we should
call the dinghy "Tookus Two" or "Tookus 2"--also if you know any
Yiddish, you know that "tuchas" (sp?) means the same as "tush".
My husband, who isn't Jewish, and who isn't keen on ethnic names
for boats still wants "Jumpin' Jack Splash" (W..we're avid rock & roll
fans and this dinghy is definitely going to do that!) I also still
    like Windjammer.

Ed, out of all these ideas have you narrowed it down to a few at
    least? Best of luck,

Bobbie, Bobbie, Bobbie! How many time's do I have to tell ya? I'm

Lou, you ought to warn people that we're (or is that were?) friends

To answer the question about my boat names, I've had both types,
    'tacky' and otherwise.

First was "Deliverance", not obviously cute until you know that the
previous owner was a doctor (ob/gyn).

Currently I have "Shibumi" which I've used three times. Initially it
was on a boat I bought so I don't take credit for imagination. Shibumi
was the name of a best seller spy novel in the early 80's by Tervanian.
It is a Japanese word used to describe an ultimate level of mental
    achievement by a Samurai warrior:

"A mystical goal, rare kind of personal excellence, state of effortless
    perfection".

It describes my image of sailing quite nicely.

By now you've probably done the naming...one strong
suggestion. If you ever get in trouble and are radioing
the Coast Guard, you need a name that is easily identified.
I named my boat SVOBODA (Ukranian for freedom). Great name,
huh? Try pronouncing it over a lot of static when the wind
is blowing 30 knots on Buzzrds Bay. Stick with sound
alikes to the alpha bravo charlie type words that radio
    jocks are used to.

Oh, and if you need inexpensive lettering done in vinyl,
call me at work and I'll give you the name of an outfit
that dows the work then mails it to you.

I saw a couple at the NOOD Regatta last week I have trouble pronouncing
when I'm dead nuts sober and the weather's calm. One was OBSTREPEROUS
and the other was CONTUMACIOUS. Racing boats pick the wierdest names
sometimes, just like race horses. Funny too, seems like the longest
names end up on the smallest boats. One of my favorites though was
short ... a J/24 named ACK!. I'd love to hear them calling out that
one at an awards ceremony ... :^)

I like the way Dick Wagner, the guy I crew for, came up with the
name for his previous boat, a Hunter 25. He was going to name it
ESCAPE. So he went out and picked up the letters. When a friend asked
him what he was going to name it he handed the bag of letters to his
friend and said "see if you can figure it out". The guy spelled out
SPACEE. And so that's what they named it. Turned out to be kinda

As an ex-Marblehead resident, now living in Santa Cruz, CA, with a boat
berthed San Francisco bay, enjoy hearing little tidbits about the
North Shore and the Cape. Feel very fortunate that we can sail year-round
out here, after spending many a winter Sunday in the "Landing" watching
    the "Frostbiters" race back and forth in the empty harbor. But anyway;
to make a long story short...
I recently traded my 1980 Catalina 30, named "Wind Drifter" for a 1990
Catalina 30 (loved the old one, so why switch). In looking for a new
name, I spotted this note and read all 77 replys. Lots of fun exchanges,
but no names... We, the wife and I, and mind you, a wife who loves sailing
as much as I do, (so no need for innocent sounding acronyms or divorce
papers in this case) got down to two names, Sea Quill (play on words for
a second boat) and Pieinthesky (ala Jimmy Cliff's song "The Harder They
Come" sort of). Because the boat is documented, we had to chose a name
right away. We picked "Pieinthesky". End of story. So what the heck ever
became of Ed? Was there really ever an Ed? And Ed, what's in a name
    anyway?
