in the mid/late '80's? That, too, is certainly available. If
desperate for a copy and you can't find it at your local bookstore, try
the Chart Kit people. Or call the Armchair Sailor in Newport.

at a discount price at the New England Book Fair in Natic ... or they
will ship it to you very quickly.

Actually, the book in mind is a paperback, about the size and heft of
the Nynex Boater's Directory. It's typically available in the Spring
and has listings for various marinas/harbors/etc. Runs in the $5-6
price range, if memory serves. Also includes some cheap photocopies
"not for navigation" ala Nynex booklet (those, I can live without).
If I run across a copy in the Spring, I'll get the correct title
and post it as a belated reply -- it's been about 2 yrs since I
saw it last (and that was in the marine store in Beverly MA).

| I've got the two volume downeast cruising guide on our boat in
Portland. If you want to borrow it for a week let me know and I'll
mail it to you; or, since we're in Acton, MA and if you're nearby you
can swing by and pick it up.

| Does anybody know of a book which covers the St.John in more detail
than Cruising the New England Coast (Duncan and Ware). I was thinking
of going there this coming summer.
Has anybody been there? I would appreciate any information you might
provide.

| It's sounds like the cruising guide that was originally asked about
wasn't the Duncan & Ware version, but for anyone who is interested in
the Duncan & Ware Cruising Guide to New England, it is apparently out
of print with no prospect of any more being printed any time in the
near future. Offshore magazine has been serializing it to try and get
the information more widely available, but I just discovered that there
is a bookstore in Boston which claims to have bought up the last few
copies available. It is located on Lewis Wharf and is called Harri's
(I think). They apparently have only been open about 6 months, but
they've got quite a nice selection of books. Worth a visit if you are
in the area.

What is ther version and publishing date of the latest version?
I have one which I picked up at the bargain table at a mall bookstore
a few years ago, but have no idea how current it is with respect to the
latest.
Ironically, there is an individual within 50' of your and my offices
who is related to one of the authors.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that there is basically just one version
floating around. My impression was that it was last updated and
printed several (many?) years ago and no one has taken on the task of
updating it and reprinting it.
I'd didn't buy a copy for myself because my brother has one that I can
borrow. That may have been shortsighted considering it's soon to be
scarcity.

| There are/were at least two versions of New England Cruising guides.
One is hard cover and the other is soft with spiral binding. I haven't
seen the hard cover version lately in book stores. The paper store has
a copy of the spiral bound one though. I think it is 19.95 or so.

| The Duncan book went thru many updates over a number of years, but
hasnt been updated for maybe 5-8 years now. I dont believe it is the
same as a spiral bound book, since it was a many hundred page book.
In addition to pure cruising info, like landmarks and service
descriptions, it contained many historical notes. Duncan has recently
published a major volume on the history of the Maine coast, which is
probably why he hasnt done an update to the cruising guide.
I often see copies of the guide in used book stores. In fact, last week
I was in COLUMBIA TRADING COMPANY, a used marine bookstore in W.
Barnstable MA, and he had 4 or 5 copies on the shelf.
