3763.0. "need the FRUG's pepper mill" by LEDS::SIMARD (There's no traffic jam on the extra mile!) Wed Mar 03 1993 15:19

    Does anyone know where I can get a pepper mill like the one the Frugal
    Gourmet uses,he has a brass one he uses and it's from some country.

    QVC had it at one time and I didn't get a chance to call for it.

    Thanks

    Ol' Jeff was right - best darned pepper mill we've ever had (falls over
    a lot though....8-) )
    We bought ours 4 years ago while in vacation in California, in a little
    shop in Carmel. The shop was in a little outdoor 2 level mall just down
    the street from the Nature shop (sorry, it's hard to remember!) Have
    not seen it anywhere else.

    saw this item on QVC just this morning. Order # was K-1243 and price
    was $47.14. Pretty pricey if you ask me. Their phone number is 1
    800-3??-4545. Sorry can't remember it at the moment, but they do allow
    you to call anytime for any item even if it is not being broadcast at
    the time you place the order. Neat unlike the "other" shopping
    channel...is there "another" shopping channel!

    Hope this helps,
    a QVC addict

I've seen it at The Kitchen in the Burlington Mall and at various Kitchens Etc.
It runs around $45, too pricy for someone who makes DECdollars! But I think of
it every time I make a recipe that calls for more than 1/4 TBL of ground pepper
and my wrist starts to fall off.

3763.11The Frug's the bestHDLITE::MASSEYGhoti ergo sumFri Mar 05 1993 19:465
    I got the Frug's mill for Christmas 2 years ago. Having gone through
    various versions of peppermills in my lifetime, the Frug's wins hands
    down for speed, durability, and regulation of grind.

    .../ken/whose first exposure to the Frug was "Margaritas on a Stick"
3763.12SPEZKO::RAWDENGo ahead, make my dinner!Fri Mar 05 1993 20:213
    It's not the Frug's peppermill but there is a one-handed pepper grinder
    called Unicorn (which is made in Nantucket). Not sure where to
    purchase one as this was a gift. It works just fine.
3763.13GAUSS::ROTHGeometry is the real life!Sat Mar 06 1993 11:0713
    Something I've seen at the East Coast Grill and the Blue Room
    is little dishes of coarsly cracked peppercornes. I really like
    that for some dishes, better than a pepper mill.

    Supposedly you can crack the corns on a countertop with a heavy
    frying pan, but I found it hard to get consistant results when
    I've tried it and fragments tended to go scooting around.

    Maybe it takes practice :-) Too bad that fancy mill mentioned
    previously is so expensive, $40+ for a pepper mill?? Can it
    do really coarse grinds that approximate the ECG style pepper?

    - Jim
3763.14They might crack it this way...EARRTH::DREYERWaiting for a challenge...Mon Mar 08 1993 09:536
Maybe they crack their peppercorns with a mortar and pestle? Or maybe in
a mini electric grinder, pulsed for a few seconds.

Just a guess...

    When I need coarse ground peppercorns, I put them in a plastic bag and
    hit them several times with a rolling pin.

    This is also good for releiving tension! ;-)

    Thank you all for your replies on the Frug's pepper mill. As soon as I
    save up I will go searching in the stores mentioned.

    And yes, I will spend that kind of money on it. I am considering how
    much I have spent so far wooden/plastic models that break. Long term,
    I will save money.

    Again, thanks

You might want to give QVC another try, alot of times they reorder items.
They'll tell you if it's on reorder if you call and ask.

3763.20Get one in Greece!JUMP4::JOYPerception is realityTue Mar 09 1993 14:5012
    I've seen these pepper/coffee millss all over and at the prices
    mentioed here. For future reference, if anyone knows of someone going
    to Greece in the future (or check in the Greek notesfile), this is the
    place to get them. I can't believe how much they mark up the prices
    here....we got 3 sets (one for salt, one for pepper), and the largest
    one (bigger than what the Frug uses, cost about $8, with the smaller
    sizes going for less. So, if anyone knows someone in the Athens office,
    maybe we can get a little import business going on the side to supply
    the COOKS noters with reasonably priced pepper mills!

The latest COMB (liquidator, like Damark) catalog which came today has the
Authentic Frugal Gourmet Solid Brass Peppermill As Seen on TV for $39.99
with free S&H through 7/31. Their 800 number is 328-0609. 10-1/2" high,
it appears to have a decoratively tooled surface.

    I called the 800 number and tried to order the peppermill.
    They need an item identification number. Would it be
    possible for you to post it here? They also asked what
    catalog it was in - I know you said the latest one, but was
    that the July issue?

    Thanks

    re .12
    Does anyone know where to purchase the one-handed pepper mill referred
    to in .12 as "Unicorn"? I believe it is also called a pepper gun.

    I suppose I could just go to Nantucket...
