3940.0. "How to MAKE Horlicks?" by SX4GTO::WANNOOR () Sat Jun 04 1994 22:40

One of my most favourite beverage is HORLICKS.
Well, if one could find it in the States it is VERY expensive.
Horlicks is malted milk and something - great stuff!!!

I tried making it but didn't quite get it right!

Has any across-the-pond noters tried to create Horlicks?

With what did you try to make it?

It used to be sold in powdered form in jars at the supermarket - right by
the Ovaltine and other milk additives. (And, yes - it was not chocolated
at all.) Twenty-seven years ago or so when I worked in a drugstore with
a soda fountain, we regularly had it in powdered form as well - isn't any
other way to make a malted milk shake. I'd think it's gotta be still
available somewhere. Try calling a soda fountain (Friendly's?) and see
what they say. Do yourself a favor - ask for a manager, not one of the
general help.

I've also found the plain Horlicks in oriental groceries. I've not
been able to find the chocolate flavored Horlicks though.

Other brands don't taste the same. I miss being able to have chocolate
flavored Horlicks and if anybody finds a source of supply in the New
England area, I'd appreciate a pointer.

Have you tried "A Taste of Britain" in Nashua, NH? (603-598-4654) They
have a lot of British food products which are hard to find in the US.

Not recently, but a year or so ago they didn't have it.

Market Basket now carries Carnation brand Malted Milk powder - by the chocolate
milk additives.

Unfortunately, Carnation brand does not taste the same as Horlicks.
I'm still looking for someplace where I can buy Holicks in the
    chocolate flavor.

Do you have an old jar of it? Does anyone??? Look and see what
town/state it's from and any phone number. If just parent company,
then call operator for phone number. They should be able to direct
you to the closest buying spot.

If I'm not mistaken the Vermont Country STore (mail order place in
Weston, VT) sells Horlicks. I'll look up the catalog and post
    tomorrow.

    Opps, sorry for the misunderstanding...

I don't have a problem purchasing the real thing in oriental stores,
and yes, I do stock it up!

I was wondering how to create the powder itself, not how to render the
    powder into liquid form.

    Thx.

Try dry malt extract, aka spraymalt, DME, malt extract powder.
It's available at homebrew supply stores, and usually costs about
    $2-$3/pound. Get the unhopped kind.

Hi - sorry for the delay.

    Vermont Country Store:
    PO Box 3000
    Manchester, VT 05255-3000
    phone: 802-362-2400
    fax: 802-362-0285

It's not in their most recent catalog, but they vary what they put in
there by season so I'm sure they still carry it in the store and would
be happy to sell you some.

There's a specialty food store right on Harvard Square that sells
the Horlicks brand in chocolate. I forget the name of the store but
they are the one that sells a large array of imported foods of many
kinds, right next to the newstand on the corner. Can anyone help
    	with the name?

Do you chaps over there have Maltesers? They're a spherical sweet with
a crunchy Horlicky centre and smothered in chocolate. Sounds like they
would temporarily satisfy your choc/Horlicks needs.

They're marketed as the sweet so light they don't make you fat:
"Chocolates?" (thin friend 1 says reproachfully)
"Maltesers!" (thin friend 2 says triumphantly)
which means you can eat a whole box with gay abandon!!

What you refer to as Maltesers are probably the equivalent of what we
call malted milk balls. About 1/2 inch diameter, crunchy malted center
and covered with a thin layer of chocolate.
