897.0. "Low Calorie Dishes" by MORGAN::CORLISS () Mon Dec 28 1987 12:16

It's that time again for New Year's resolutions!! And mine
is to lose weight (as is probably the same as half the adult
population of the United States). Seems this past year I've
gotten into the habit of cooking large and fattening meals.
So, 16 pounds and 12 months later, it's time to diet.

I am looking for recipes that are low in calories and proportioned
for two adults with very healthy appetites. We love to eat fish,
chicken, salads and vegetables, so all suggestions are welcome.

Also, a great help would be suggestions for calorie cutting
    substitutions.

    Thanks,

    Debbie

Add SRFSUP::WEIGHTLOSS to your notebook! There are a SLEW of
recipes in there which are low in calories, and delicious, as
well as references for various low-cal products and cookbooks.
Plus there are hints for how to reduce cals in your favorite
    recipes. Take a look.

In addition, check out notes referenced by the keyword low-calorie
(or is it low_calorie?) in this notesfile. I've added a few, and
    included calorie counts in some.

Simplest, least stressful thing I've found is to eat as you have
    been, only *less* of everything.

I love to eat! My solution is to excersize. Strenuous excersize
is not for everyone, be careful. With all these home videos you
don't have to leave your house to get a good work out. If you have
a VCR, go to the nearest vidoe rental place and check out some
aerobic work out videos. If you don't have a VCR they also sell
audio cassets that motivate and instruct you to excersize.

The best way to lose weight is to eat on a set schedule and not
to snack. You can basically eat whatever you want, even seconds,
as long as you do it at the same times. Always eat well balanced
meals and eat 3 of them a day with you last meal coming no later
than 3 - 4 hours before you go to bed. Also light excersise, such
as walking, will help. fat usually arises when people eat too much
of one kind of food(good food or junk food) and not enough of something
    else.

I found some great recipes believe it or not in Victoria Principal's
Diet Book. The book has some great recipes, that are easy, and
specifically geared towards chicken, fish and salads. I didn't follow
the diet but found the recipes good. Good luck!

If your are short on time I have found that a great dinner (low
in calories) is to combine my fish/chicken/turkey with the various
Custom Cusine Vegetables (but not the one with pasta). They average
about 70 cal per serving for the veggies. I tend to go light on
the protein and heavy on the veggies for my meals.

To find diet recipes in the notesfile, ADD ENTRY SRFSUP::WEIGHTLOSS.
And then go in and read note numbers 3,4,14,17,62,69 and 102. I
didn't go into each of them and check them out, but I did a directory
check for diet recipes and that's the numbers it gave me.

If you are still looking for those diet recipes, try the
    following cookbooks.

Dieter's Cookbook by Better Homes and Gardens
    	Cooking Light by Oxmoor House

The Cooking Light cookbooks are issued annually. I have the
1987 and 1988 versions. Although I have a number of diet
type cookbooks, these are the best by far.

    					Enjoy,
