2593.0. "CAKE: Animal shaped cake pans?" by ACESMK::GOLIKERI () Tue Aug 28 1990 15:36

Where in southern New Hampshire can I find "special" cake pans i.e.
shaped like a bear, dog, etc. I am looking particularly to make a bear
shaped cake for my daughter's b'day.

    Thanks

Assuming it would be the same in MA...I've seen them in party stores--
the ones that carry everthing from paper plates to plastic champagne
glasses to any size of foil pan you can imagine. Also, check the
yellow pages to see if there's a cake decorating supplier in your area
    (esp. Wilton's).

Ben Franklin Craft on Rt101A in Milford (I think) in the Lorden Shopping plaza
has a variety of cake decorating tools as well as flavoring and the frosting
themselves.

Good Luck,

The BEST place of know of for baking pans, cake decorating supplies,
etc. is Eaton's School of Cake Decorating on the 28 Bypass in Hooksett.

They carry just about everything, and I also believe they will order
anything you want if they don't carry it. Call them. Their number is
    603-627-1808.

2593.8"Shape" the cakeMAJORS::MANDALINCIThu Aug 30 1990 12:2611
If you don't want to buy the pan, I have a book that shows how to make
animal shaped cakes by cutting them. It is the "old" Angelflake coconut
book - you know around Easter time you always see the Easter bunny cake
made from 2 round cake pans - same thing.

I guess it depends upon the lifespan of the pan. Let me know if you are
interested because I'll either try to enter in the description or I'll
fax you a copy of it (I'm in England so interoffice mail could take
    a couple weeks).

2593.13oval watermelon pan seen in central Mass??APLVEW::DEBRIAETue Jul 18 1995 17:2619
I need to find a watermelon-shaped cake baking pan, ie, an oval pan the shape
of a watermelon cut in half.

I'm making an ice cream bombe using the pan if I can find one. I've seen
these in several magazines and cookbooks, but cannot locate a store with them
around here. I'll go anywhere in the Nashua-Worcester-Newton triangle to
find one (need it for a party this weekend).

I've tried Kitchen Etc, Williams-Sonoma, and several party goods stores. The
closest thing I could get to it was a football-shaped pan which wouldn't work
for me. I've seen the pans with neat watermelon ridges in multiple
publications, so they must be out there somewhere. At this point I'd even
settle for just a regular large oval pan or bowl, could be plastic too (will
  only be frozen).

  Any ideas?

The Cheese Shop(pe) in Concord, MA, has an oval-shaped glass
baking dish. There are two sizes - one is about 12" long and
the other is about 10 and 1/2" long. Both are around 8" wide,
according to the saleswoman. Their number is 508-369-5778,
	if you're interested.

    	Great, thanks!!

Last night I called every cake decorating supply source in the NH,
Boston, Worcester, Framingham and Lowell yellow pages. Not one had
seen this type of cake pan. One older woman said that they used to
make them two decades ago, but that's the last time she had seen
one. Most carry the Wilton product line, and several claimed to
have the largest collection of pans in New England. :-)

Perhaps this bombe mold used by the California Culinary Institute
and the other places all came from old personal collections then.

The oval-glass baking dish should work fine too. Last night, in
desperation after the phone calls, I discovered a longish bowl
that's part of a salad spinner that might work in a pinch too,
if I make two batches, fill the bowl, cut the result in half,
and slide them end-to-end together. Still won't have those neat
ridges on the sides which makes part of the presentation but it
might still come out well in the end anyway. The oval-glass dish
sounds better too, no having the cut the result in half.
