3826.0. "Chocolate covered coffee beans" by BASEX::GEOFFREY (Don't trust Mr.Magoo) Fri Jul 30 1993 14:49

The other day while traveling through the Bradley International
airport in Hartford Cn. I stopped at a little chocolate stand and
purchased some chocolate covered coffee beans. Obviously the beans were
somehow processed so that you wouldn't break your teeth. Does anyone
    know/have a recipe for making these ?

    			Thanks,

    			  Jim

I've never broken my tooth on a coffee bean, chocolate covered or
otherwise. Not that I eat them on a regular basis, but the occasion
    has occured...

I don't know that they would necessarily be "jaw-breakers" in any event, but
the ones I've had have a particularly clear advantage over the "standard"
coffee bean, in that they don't leave a mess of coffee grounds in your mouth
when you chew them. Rather, they tend to be "powdery" when bitten into. It's
my understanding that they are simply "over-roasted" to the point that they
no longer have the texture that you'd want if you were brewing coffee with
them.

When I was a child my grandmother would send me various types of
candy and chocolate from Germany every christmas. One of these
was a chocolate coffee bean. This version looked like a bean, but
was actually made entirely of chocolate with a mocca taste. The outside
    surface was highly polished.
I sometimes see these chocolates at the deli around Christmas now,
but they are very very hard to find - my mother and I use them for
cake cookies and pastry decoration. They are just the perfect thing
for our baking, but I CAN'T FIND THEM!
Anyone know a good source (anywhere???).

The edibility of coffee beans depends especially on how long
they've been cooked (roasted). The longer they've been roasted,
the more they tend to expand and become less bullet-like. Beans
that are called `espresso' or `dark roast' have been roasted the
longest, and I'd expect those to be used in chocolate-covered
       stuff.

RE: .4

I don't know where you're located, but the help-yourself candy shop in Pheasant
Lane Mall in Nashua, NH carries them. If you're not in the Nashua area, try
any mall that has one of those shops, as they all should have them.

    re .4

I also got a small bag of those "all chocolate" coffee flavored beans
at the gourmet shop in Harvard Square (forget the name). I think they
    were imported from Europe (Droste?)

Chocolate covered espresso beans are even better than chocolate covered
coffee beans, but I can't seem to find any around. My source used to be
the Confetti candy store at the PLM in Nashua. Anybody see any around?

In Boston you should be able to purchase them through the Coffee
Connection. Try the one at Fanueil (sp?) hall.

The coffee place in Pheasant Lane Mall had chocolate-covered espresso
beans - as of last Christmas, which was the last time I looked for any.
    They were good, too...

Actually I was at the Pheasant Lane Mall last month; saw the
candy shop but didn't go in because I was not thinking about my
    endless search for those beans.

    I probably will not find one of those stores up were I am;
    I'm in CANADA.

Where its raining now. Hard. (yech!)

Although I've personally never purchased them there, it's my understanding
that Eastern Mountain sports also carries them. I don't know how extensive
a chain EMS might be.

Thanks for all the tips. I'll look into the coffee connection next time
at Harvaard Square, and try the shops mentioned at the PLM.

BTW, Cardulo's is the name of the gourmet shop I mentioned in my note
for the solid coffee flavored chocolate candies.

3826.14Mall Chain is Help Ur selfSALES::LTRIPPThu Aug 05 1993 13:0114
    re a few back...

Help Ur Self is a Mall type chain, there is also one in the Auburn Mall
(obviously in Auburn MA). This particular chain has lots of unique and
unusual candy, and lots of penny candy. There is another similar type
store at Greendale mall, that may be a possibility too.

I remember there was a gourmet store in the Center of Lexington, it's
been too long to remember the name. They had lot of unusual things, I
used to get cocoanut oil, which is really very hard not oil, there for
cooking popcorn. Right on Mass ave near whatever the hotel in the
    center is.

those non-coffee bean coffee beans are also available in Acton at
Wild about Chocolate. I know, that doesn't help you in canada!
but it might help others around here....!

Acton is STILL closer to Ottawa than Bavaria, so thanks, Sandy!
(it is also more likely that DEC will send me on training to the
Boston area than to Europe, too!)

I found a candy store in Maynard last week (during
training) that carries the chocolate covered espresso
beans and the mocho/chocolate beans that Monica
referenced. It's called Chosen Chocolates and it's
across the street from the Mill.

So, Monica, got any more training scheduled in
Maynard 8-).

For those in Worcester, there's a place called The Chocolate Smith
on Pleasant St. in Tatnuck Square that carries the chocolate
covered coffee beans. I think the Chocolate Smith also has a
'booth' in the Tatnuck Bookseller that carries them.

I've always wondered... how many beans to you need to eat to equal
one cup of coffee??? :) Or maybe I should phrase that as how few
can I eat before getting totally wired?!
