3071.0. "BROCCOFLOWER" by MAMTS3::SHAMMON () Thu Jun 06 1991 13:43

    Last night at the grocery store I bought "Broccoflower". Of course,
    it's a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. Has anybody out there
    ever tried it? I'm making it tomorrow night for some dinner guests.
    Some creative suggestions would be much appreciated.

         As a matter of fact, I picked up some Broccoflower from King
    Soopers (Colorado grocery store with a weird name) last night. From
    what I can tell, it was an attempt to satisfy customers who are eating
    more veggies, but find broccoli too intense. It tastes more like
    cauliflower to me. Not bad, but I don't think it has any advantage
    over either vegetable.

3071.2Great recipe/showpiece for cauliflowerICS::ANDERSON_MThu Jun 06 1991 14:1017
    Gee, I live in Massachusetts, wish I could get my hands on some!

    I have taken a whole cauliflower (do not break it up into flowerets)
    and steam it for about 15 minutes. I didn't really time it I just kept
    testing it with a knife. Cook til al dente.

    Take out (carefully) place on a colored round platter - drizzle olive
    oil over it, sprinkle with chopped chives and grated Romano
    Cheese...sprinkle with cracked black pepper. Yummy yummy - and looks
    beautiful too. Quite a conversation piece.

    The platter I used was a royal cobalt blue! I then had black olives
    stuffed with cream cheese and placed that around the base of the
    cauliflower.

    That sounds real nice. Broccoflower is a real pretty light green, and
    I also have a cobalt blue serving platter. Black olives are yummy
    also.  Thanks.

    I tried it and really didn't like it well enough to buy it again. I
    thought it ruined the taste of both vegetables myself. I still have
    some in the fridge, keep looking at it but can't quite pick it up to
    bother cooking it again.

    I live in MA and I think I got it at Shaw's or Big D in Hudson.

    Big D has it in Shrewsbury and on Massasoit Road in Worcester. I
    haven't bought it yet because I thought the price was too high. I am
    also unhappy with the produce alot at the Big D on Mass. Road. (to the
    point where I think I'll stop going there now that they started bubble
    wrapping everything again.

    REGARDING .2. MANY YEARS AGO AT THANKSGIVING, MY MOTHER SAY AN ADD IN
    THE FAMILY CIRCLE MAGAZINE THAT HAD A WOLE CAULIFLOWER ON A PLATER.
    SHE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GREAT IDEA FOR ONE OF HER VEGGIES TO SERVE.
    SOMEHOW, THE PHOTOGRAPHY THAT WAS USED TO TAKE THE PICTURE MADE THE
    DISH LOOKS REAL GOOD, WHEN SHE BROUGHT THE PLATTER OUT AND PUT IT ON
    THE TABLE IN FRONT OF US, MY SISTER AND I JUST LOOKED AT EACH OTHER AND
    STARTED LAUGHING. (HOPE THIS DOESN'T GROSS ANYONE OUT) IT LOOKES LIKE
    A BRAIN!!!! TILL THIS DAY (SOME 16 YEARS LATER!) WE HAVE NEVER LET HER
    FORGET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3071.12TRIED ITGRANMA::SHAMMONMon Jun 10 1991 11:444
    I made broccoflower this weekend. I steamed it till fork-tender, then
    sauteed it in olive oil and garlic and some parmesean. General
    concensus was that real broccoli and real cauliflower are better. It
    was fun to try. The color is a little unappetizing after it is cooked.

break into bite-sized chunks.

steam it until crisp tender (approx. 4 - 5 mins), plunge into cold water to
stop cooking. Marinade the pieces in spicy italian dressing along with chunks
of uncooked sweet red peppers, sweet yellow peppers, half-slices of spanish
red onion, and black olives. Serve as a salad atop butter lettuce leaves.

YUMMY! I liked this better than the same dish prepared with broccoli or
cauliflower.
3071.14Loved It!POBOX::SCHWARTZINGEi'd rather be shoppingWed Jun 19 1991 19:1312
    I bought this and I love it!

    All I do is take off the leaves, leave the stem ( so it will hold the
    head up while steaming). Put water, pinch of salt and a little
    vinegar in the pan, steam, and it was great! (I always put a little
    vinegar when I do a Cauliflower, it keeps it white, so I did it to
    this too! I don't know why, creature of habit, I guess!)

    My husband even liked it! (And he doesn't like anything!)

    I didn't think of this till now, but I bet it is a good vegetable for
    dipping. Something new to add the the veggie tray!

    Did you think it tasted more like broccoli or cauliflower??
    Just wondering. . .

3071.16from Cooking Light.NOVA::FISHERIt's SpringWed Jun 19 1991 19:5513
    Cooking Light has a 1/4 pg on Broccoflower in the July/August ish.

    "as much Vit. C ass an orange"
    "milder and sweeter then either broccoli or cauliflower (possibly
    increasing it appeal to kids)"
    "A 1-cup serving of raw broccoflower contains 64 calories, virtually no
    fat and 75 mg of vitamin C. It's also high in folic acid and
    surprisingly high in copper. So put this interesting vegetable on your
    grocery list."

    Now, which note was the grocery list? :-)
