dibs....

12 glass plates, approx 4 1/2 inches round, suitable for appetizers or
small deserts or salads. Purchased from an antique dealer who said
that "Mamie Eisenhower" used these plates at a luncheon back in the
late 50's. (Does this "mean" something?)

Any interest? I thought $25. for the set.

Wanted:

A friend has lost her sourdough starter. But it is a liquid mixture,
which uses water, sugar and potato flakes. Would anyone either have
some of this starter to share or have a recipe to "start" a new batch?
I have not heard of this variation before, but it produces a very sweet
soft loaf of bread. (Similar to the Cracker Barrel variety). Any help
would be appreciated.

I received this book as a gift. It contains full-page color photographs

1261.180Want steamed coffee!WAGON::BUNNELLThu Oct 08 1992 19:0810
Anyone know where I can find a GOOD coffe and milk/cream steamer?
I want to make coffee like I had in Europe, like cappucino.
Years ago I bought an "Expresso/Capuccino" maker but it really s*cks,
to be honest; it's really small and I'm certain its not what is used
in Europe.
Any pointers? I am in NH.

Thanks,

1261.181TNPUBS::MACKONISOur world-another planet's hell!Fri Oct 09 1992 12:329
Some of the coffee/expresso shops in the malls (Manchester and Nashua) sell
Capuccino machines. But be prepared to pay around $300 for one that puts
in a good head of steam. I have bought 4 over the years that I returned
and it is primarily that they don't have the oomph in them to create the
steam to create the frothy milk, etc. to make a decent capuccino.

Expresso machines are easier to find.

1261.183Krups is about $80CUPMK::CLEMINSHAWConanneTue Oct 13 1992 17:1520
I have a Krups that cost $80, it makes ok coffee but steams the milk
well. I bought it after I came back from europe and wanted good coffee
every day! The consumer reports article is good. Most of the espresso
makers under the $300 kind do not officially produce "espresso."
True espresso is produced by forcing steam through the coffee. Most
cheap makers just boil the water in a chamber, when the water boils, it
pushes itself through the opening holding the coffee. (I'm sure some
of you engineering and physics persons can explain this better, I'm an
English major, ok?) You can make this kind of coffee on the stove in a
little two-chambered pot that costs about $15. So basically, I paid
$65 to get a thing that also steams the milk.

The plastic handle controlling the steam valve broke off last night
when I was really needing a cappuchino, too. (the handle sits on a
metal stem that heats up when the pot is on, I guess the plastic
finally got brittle from heat stress.) I was going to have a small
fit, when I ransacked my tools. A 7mm wrench does real well, in case
you ever have this problem.

1261.216Looking for dried, flaked vegetablesHOTLNE::CORMIERTue May 03 1994 19:168
I'm looking for a source for dried flaked vegetables. They usually
come in soup mixes (Lipton or Knoors). I don't need all the other
stuff, just the vegetables. Any ideas? So far I've been buying the
soup mixes and tossing out the salty bouillon stuff... I use these for
just about everything, so if you have any ideas, pelase let me know!
I'm in HLO (Hudson, MA), so anywhere within 1/2 hour drive is OK.

1261.217Camping food?NAPIER::HEALEYM&ES, MRO4, 297-2426Wed May 04 1994 11:599
Check out a store that sells camping supplies? They usually
have dehydrated meals for campers so I imagine dehydrated
vegetables would also be available.

Unfortunately, I can't suggest any where to go. Check your
local phone book and make a phone call or two?

Karen
1261.218suggestionsCUPMK::STEINHARTWed May 04 1994 13:5710
You can get several dehydrated vegetables sold in the spice aisle,
packed individually. For example, I keep dehydrated celery because I
use such small amounts when making soup. Check the spice aisle in any
supermarket, and also check at the health food store, where you can
also buy low-salt soup mixes and such (which might solve your problem).

As for onions, there are many dried preparations, but I particularly
like the frozen chopped onions. They have the most flavor imo.

1261.219Keep 'em comingHOTLNE::CORMIERWed May 04 1994 14:134
Thanks for th leads so far. My supermarkets don't carry anything dried
except onions and chives. I'm looking for things like dried carrots,
leafy-types like escarole and spinach, red peppers, etc. I can find
tomatoes easily enough. Any other ideas, let me know! Thanks!
1261.220Try Spice-it-UpGOLLY::CARROLLthe courage of my contradictionsWed May 04 1994 15:357
I got a bunch of spices for Christmas from a place called "Spice It
Up". I know they have an 800 number, which might be 1-800-SPI-ICEUP.
If that doesn't work, try 800 information at 1-800-555-1212.

Including in my gift "spice kit" was a bottle of dehydrated vegetable
flakes. I've never used them, but I assume that is what you are
looking for.
1261.221take my veggies - please!GOLLY::CARROLLthe courage of my contradictionsWed May 04 1994 15:361
PS: You are free to have the 1/2 oz or so I have if you are in ZK. :-)
1261.222Yes, that's it exactly!HOTLNE::CORMIERWed May 04 1994 16:046
Wish I could take you up on that offer, but I'm in HLO!
Anyway, that's exactly what I'm looking for. When I make rice, lentils
or beans, I like to toss in some for interest. I don't always (read .
NEVER) have the time to dice up fresh veggies, and the dried have more
of a "bite". Thanks for the lead!
Sarah
1261.223try "soup greens"3D::RICHARDSONWed May 04 1994 16:185
Look for "soup greens" in the herbs and spice section of the market.
I haven't bought them in a while, though - I like fresh veggies ebtter
for most things.

1261.224try spagsSPICE::LUPIENWed May 04 1994 17:306
My Mom used to use them to make soups etc when camping. I think she
got them at SPAGS in the spice section... Spice - Dehydrated vegtables,
I think it had carrots, tomatoes, green something... It's worth a try.

Microwave/Convection Oven - will microwave, convection cook or a
combination of the two. 1.5 cu.ft capacity, 650W. 12 years old. We had
a power hit and blew a board. The repair will cost between $150-200. If
you want to pay to have it fixed, you can have the oven for free. It
was working fine before this power hit. We decided to get a new one
rather than repair this (new ones are a bit smaller and more
efficient), but it cost $470. So if you would like the functionality at
half the cost, come pick up the oven. We live in Littleton/Westford

Marble slab
Gray and white marble slab, can be used for working with
pastry dough or fudge. We replaced this marble slab with
a larger one a couple of years ago. It's the standard
marble you see in cooking stores -- roughly 12" x 16", about
1/2-inch thick. A bit scratched on the top surface. $5.

Condiment dish
Just in time for the holidays! Oval-ish glass condiment
dish, with two sections. The divider is a sort of
squiggly line down the middle. Elegant! Traditional
in nature, we prefer a contemporary look. $4.

Wanted: Canning Jars. Preferrably 4 or 8 oz jelly jars, but will
consider others.

Must be the type that you can use with screw on lids. They don't have
to have the rings or lids, just the jars would be great.

The cheaper the better, and as many as I can find.
