3504.0. "STORE: Fish Market/Westboro Area?" by STUDIO::PELUSO (PAINTS; color your corral) Mon Apr 06 1992 12:04

I want to start eating more fish, the problem is that I can't
seem to find a good source for it in the Westboro area. Any
    suggestions???

I've tried the the fish from the local grocery store, but I don't think
it was very fresh as both times I cooked it, it tasted horrid! The
fish had a stinky smell to it as well - and it was cooked the same day
of purchase. I've been cooking and enjoying fish for years, and when I
lived in Boston, I had no problem getting it fresh.

If you don't consider Maynard too far, and if you don't mind paying a
pretty penny, buy fish at the Quarterdeck. It's about as fresh as you
can find in a store.

However, QD is very expensive. It pays to learn to recognize fresh fish
so that you can buy it when you see it at a local supermarket. We've
found that Triple-A in Acton often has excellent fish for a lot less
than QD, but it's not as reliable, and you have to be able to tell by
looking. We also take anything not fresh back before cooking it.

It pays to know what days the local market gets its fish in.
    My Purity Supreme was Tuesdays.

There is a small fish store in the Cold Harbor Shopping Plaza in
Northboro. That's right near the Agway and the Zecco Company on
the way into Shrewsbury. (I don't know what the street is called
that bears right at the "Y" where Rte 20 West bears left toward
    Rte 9...West Main Street?)

I have bought there several times and have been pleased. It is worth
checking out before driving all the way to Maynard.

i wish i could remember the name of the one on route 9. i think its
captain bob's or something like that. should be in the yellow pages.
they have some excellent sales that i see in the paper. i have not
    been. its in framingham.

fwiw, i don't get my fish at the quarterdeck although i do love their
food and think there is fish is great you are right; just too damn
    expensive!

i do like triple A in acton, purity supreme and the countryfare star
    market in stow.

Capt'n Bob's is on Beacon St. in Framingham just off Rte 9. This is at
the Rte 126 exit. Their fish is excellent and they have a good choice.

I believe the Sole Proprietor and Legal Seafood, both in Worcester have markets.
3504.7Marlboro SeafoodAURORA::MCFARLANDMon Apr 06 1992 15:5913
You could also try Marlboro Seafood, located at the corner of Mechanic
    and Lincoln Sts in Marlboro.

I always have good luck there, and it is sure a lot closer to Westboro
    than Maynard.

Price for haddock on Thursday 4/2 was $6.29 lb, that is a bit higher
than I have paid for it when I purchase it there in the past few
months. But you know, prices go up for lent.

Try Hudson Fish Market, located across from the Shell gal station
which is right on Main Street. He (the merchant) goes to the wharf
every Tuesday and I would recommend buying your fish on Tuesdays.

One way to make sure your fish is fresh is to look at the eyes. If
the eyes are milky with sort of a grey hue, the fish are not fresh.
However, if the eys are clear like spring water, then the fish are
fresh. If fish smells, don't buy it. It should have no smell when
    fresh. Good luck.

In reply to the question on buying seafood in westboro, I have been
very pleased with the super Stop & Shop in Westboro on Rte 9.
The person to see @ the store is named SUE she is very helpful
and knowledgeable on seafood. Hope this helps

3504.10"Fresh" is tough to come by !!JUPITR::TODDThu Jun 18 1992 18:5714

    	FWIW,

Legal Seafood is the only consistantly "fresh" across
their entire line of fish products in the Worcester/Shrews
North/Westboro area. They are also 25% more expensive.

    	Captain Bob's is next, Framingham.

In the Summer, there's a little stand off grafton street in
Worcester. Their stuff is fabulously fresh, but needs trimming
    	most of the time.

I've had great luck with the new EDWARD's supermarket in Shrewsbury.
Everything I've bought so have has been great! Give it a try. (They
have super specials too!) Edward's is on Rt. 9 next to Home Quarter's
    Warehouse.

3504.12Edwards is a good store....LEDS::SIMARDjust in time.....Mon Dec 07 1992 17:279
I will never buy fish there again. Each time I've bought it it's been
    on the verge of "old".

I've had the fish people at the Big D tell me they didnt' want to sell
me something because it was getting along.

I like Edwards for a lot of things but I find I leave their meat and
    fish counters alone.
