1734.0. "Peanut Butter Syrup?" by TSG::FORSYTHE () Wed Apr 19 1989 23:15

Does anyone have a recipe for Peanut Butter Syrup? I'm talking
about the type of syrup that the Friendly's Ice Cream people
put on a REESE'S PIECES sundae up here in the northeast.

I've tried peanut butter and corn syrup, but it stays rather
    rather thick.

    Any ideas?

As kids we used to make a peanut butter/syrup combo for sandwiches. It was
half pancake type syrup and half peanut butter. I imagine you could just add
more syrup to make it more runny...

TIME: About 10 minutes before serving or early in day
    YIELD: about 1 1/2 cups

2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
    1/2 cup half and half
    1 tblsp honey
3/4 cup chunky or creamy peanut butter

    1. In heavy 1 quart saucepan over medium heat, heat brown sugar,
half and half and honey to boiling, stirring occasionally.

    2. Remove saucepan from heat. Stir in peanut butter until blended
and smooth. Serve sauce warm over ice cream, pancakes or waffles.
Or refrigerate sauce; reheat in heavy 1 quart saucepan over low
    heat, stirring constantly.

Actually, the peanut sauce that Friendly's uses is not sweet at all.
You can purchase it at any Friendly's for about $2.65 a pint. We buy
it all the time. It seems that is is made of natural (like) peanut
butter (the kind WITH salt etc.) and added oil to keep it runny. I
have tried the previous recipe. NOTHING like Friendly's. After
various attempts to duplicate this stuff, I decided to spend the $.

I worked at Friendly's a few years back, for extra cash.

The peanutbutter sauce they have there is made specifically
for them by the same people that make Reeces(tm). Is this
    the Hershey Co.?

And Hershey's owns the Friendly Restaurant chain.

I believe that Hershey USED to own Friendly Restaurants, but after
several years of losing money/market share, found that producing foods
is a VERY different proposition than running a restaurant chain.

Hershey spun off Friedly Restaurants about a year or a year and a half
ago (not sure whether it was a private placement, or an employee
buy-out, but believe it is now a privately held company).
