    Anne,

I live in Central Mass. but.....I recently noticed juniper berries
at my local health food store....amongst the bulk spices. Perhaps
you have a similar store nearby.

Why not just go into the woods and pick your own?

There are loads of them on the native junipers behind my house in NH --
wonderful fragrance of gin -- used them in saurbraten frequently.

2331.3Local = Toxic??NITMOI::PESENTIOnly messages can be draggedFri Mar 30 1990 12:019
Someone once told me (maybe it was in this file?) that the local
Juniper berries were toxic. I don't know if they were referring to
natural toxins or absorbed from the wonderful stuff we use on our
environment (in which case things from the woods would be safer than
ones from the front yard). Since dead men don't use notes, I guess
they are not instantly fatal. However, I find them in lots of grocery
stores, so I'd rather use the bottled ones. At least if they prove
fatal, my relatives stand a chanc to inherit some of the Durkee
    fortune.

I was at the Spring Garden and Flower Show (Manchester Armory on
Canal St Manchester) last night, and stopped by a booth run by
Crown Point Herbs. They stock juniper berries at their store.
She said that she uses them in potpourri, and has heard of people
making tea with juniper berries. Here's her address and phone number,
in case you can't find them elsewhere:

*ALL* juniper berries are toxic, if consumed in quantity.

I bought juniper berries last fall at Pickety Place in Mason, N.H.
I also picked my own while out in Arizona - I wanted my Navajo
cooking to be as authentic as possible. I do think the ones from
Arizona were more aromatic than the ones I bought.

Juniper berries are used a lot in Navajo cooking to flavor stews and
    soups (mainly lamb).
