3272.0. "Glass inset for silver serving dish?" by JENEVR::MCKIM (DIGITAL Services CASE Consulting) Mon Oct 21 1991 13:01

    I recently received a silver serving dish. I would like to use it, but
    would like to have a glass inset in which to put the food. Does
    anyone know where in southern New Hampshire I can find a place
    which sells such glass insets?

3272.1Check the Oneida Outlet StoresOBSESS::MACARTHURMon Oct 21 1991 13:502
    James - you can check at the Oneida outlet stores. I know that there's
    one up in Kittery, Maine.

    You can try McDonald's Kitchenware 7 Factory St, Nashua 882-0231. If
    they don't have it no one does. Their store appears to be very
    cluttered but those who work there can find anything.

3272.3Your Local Glazier Can Do ItPINION::HACHENuptial Halfway HouseMon Oct 21 1991 18:236

    Any glazier can cut a piece of glass to fit the need.
    Look in the yellow pages under glass and bring the tray
    with you when you go.

3272.5So far, no goodJENEVR::MCKIMDIGITAL Services CASE ConsultingMon Nov 11 1991 15:305
    Well, so far, not luck. I tried McDonald's in Nashua as well
    as other Kitchen/silver type places with no luck. Next stop
    will be the Oneider outlet.

3272.6Jewelry and gift store?MCIS5::CORMIERMon Nov 11 1991 16:003
    Try a jewelry store that sells silverware. I got a lucite inset for a
    silver tray at Sharfman's in Worcester, MA. I would think any fine
    jewelry and gift store could help you out?
3272.7Using sterling silver serving piecesFUSEIT::sharoneSharon EikenberryFri Feb 18 1994 19:547
I have several sterling silver serving pieces that don't have any glass
inserts. Is it ok to serve food directly on the silver? Are there
particular foods that I should avoid puttng on the silver?

Thanks!

3272.8Acid!PEKING::POLLINGTONIIan PollingtonFri Feb 18 1994 22:316
         If I was you I wouldn't put anything acidic on that silver.
         It's O.K. to eat acidic stuff with silver cutlery as the
         contact is minimal...but leaving it in touch *may* cause
         problems.

3272.9Use lots of garnish ...TANRU::CHAPMANMon Feb 21 1994 14:555
    Re -.1 -- the acidic foods on silver won't harm you -- it does stain
    the silver and require the silver to be cleaned more frequently. In
    the old days the way around this problem was to lavishly use garnish,
    like parsley to keep the food from coming in contact with the silver
    serving trays.  ...

    Brussels Sprouts will stain silver badly and the stains tend to be very
    very difficult to get out.

    B'Sprouts are a standard Thanksgiving menu item at our house, but they
    are always served in SS serving dishes with SS utensils and never see
    silver.
