This is not a complete segmentation fault. The addresses
indicate that the code is in a fatal signal handler. This
segmenation fault does not give us any clues why a seg. fault occurred.

By going to the line specified in String1, it looks like
there must have been some type of error getting the first bodypart.

By going to the line specified in String1, it looks like
there must have been some type of error getting a message.
Additionally, looking at the time stamp of the previous message,
    this makes sense.

Have you spoken to user, grau, to see what was being done at 12:53
on April 22? What client/version was being used at the time?
What operation was being done -- read, delete, move, copy, etc...?

By going to the line specified in String1, it looks like
there was a problem connecting to the user's message store --
thus the problem getting the first bodypart of a message...

Now we find out that user, grau, has a message store corruption.
Did you mschk the message store?
All of the errors related to:
    - connecting to a message store,
    - getting a message
    - getting the first bodypart
are all most likely related to one problem. This was determined
by looking at the timestamps of each of the events logged. I am
not sure why so many (Error MSCorrupt) events were logged.

Engineering will look at this further and try to post an update
    as soon as possible.

1370.2mcs patch ??NNTPD::"Walter.Appenzeller@suo.mts.dec.com"Walter AppenzellerWed Apr 23 1997 14:5610
Hi,
It was me that installed the 2.0.4 on this customer on two locations. The
error appears on both.
I recognized that on the ftp site (mail4u.zko.dec.com:/raider/V200_ECO4) where
I got the kit from there is a separate mcs executable. Is that a patch and has
to be copied over??

Walter

No, the mcs image in the ECO4 area is not a patch.

I assume that this problem started to appear only after
you installed ECO4?

We have seen the kind of stack traces that are shown in your
logs once before - we believe it that they disappeared when
we changed the compiler debug and optimization switches that
we used.

So, I have created another version of ECO4 using a different
set of debug options. It is located in the same directory
as the original kit, but has the name mailworkskit.tar.experimental.
mail4u.zko.dec.com:/raider/V200_ECO4/mailworkskit.tar.experimental

I suggest that you copy this kit and install it - I *hope* that
it will solve the customer's problems.

(Note that the only thing that has changed in this build
is the compiler options - the application logic is exactly
the same.)

How often were the problems appearing in the log files?

I have a pretty similar situation with V2.0-1. I am front ending
mailworks with procmail who in turn feeds new mails in via cls.
I do this to presort mails into folders.

I see an almost identical footprint, about twice a week now, and
each time, cls appears to crash and then stopMAILworks does not
kill the mss. The consequence of that is that I have to manually
terminate mss and then I have to rebuild my message store because
   it gets "corrupted".

I was actually just going to upgrade to ECO-4, but the ECO kit
appears to want me to delete the previous kit (will that zap
   my DMW configuration too?).

Here is a sample from the msslog. As far I can tell, I do not have
a diskspace problem. And I have about 1Gb+ of swapspace. What may
have happened at 19:29 would have been an attempt to bring in a new
message, using 'inc' into my inbox:

I no longer have the original message that caused it, but I do have a log
in one of my terminal windows as to what my mail filtering was doing at that
time. My filtering stuff basically cumulates stuff in text files if it is
unable to feed it into mailworks. So even if mailworks is down, I still
receive (although it piles up). Once up, the first message directed to that
folder releases all the rest.

I can see (as per my log) that I received a similar automated response from
a computer account a few hours later (once my stuff was down). I do have a
copy of that message. I have attached it here. I suspect that this is very
similar to the message that was being processed at the time of the Malloc
problem. It may of course not have been this very message, but this may just
have been a catalyst:

Per -

I'll turn on your old account, and you can debug it if you want :-)

Unfortunately, the copy of ECO1 that you're running was apparently
created before the official ECO1, so we no longer have a kit
that I can symbolize the stack traces.

I *was* able to inc the file you included without any
trouble (on my workstation, which has far less swap space.)

One thing to check is your system tuning parameters.
Try running the script DMW-system-check - it will ask you
for the number of concurrent users, and tell you if three different
kernel tuning parameters are set right.

Other than that, I think we'd need the specific message that
put you (or your system) over the edge.

Also, if we can get you to upgrade at least to one of the
official kits (preferably ECO4), we'll be able to make more
sense out of the stack traces, which might help us some.

The problem with the crashing mcs still exists in the experimental version. It
took a bit longer to occur but this was probably due to less user activity
during the last days.

Is it safe to install ECO 3 or even 2? I won't go back to 2.00 because the
customer wants the file name feature introduced in ECO 2.

Yes, it is safe to go back to ECO2 (I would suggest ECO2,
rather than ECO3, because we don't know if the problem you're seeing
is from a change we put into ECO3.

Meanwhile, when the mcs crashes, with the experimental
version, do the stack traces appear any different?
In particular, are they longer, or is the item on the
bottom of the stack different from 0x400000800000000 ?

Also, what are the symptoms you are seeing?
Is the mcs process actually disappearing? Or is the
mcs process still there, but not responding? If it
is still there, is it using any CPU time? How much?
