1360.0. "What do I do?" by TKOV51::MINEGISHI () Fri Mar 14 1997 04:58

HELP!

MS Exchange user some times could not use MailWorks.
Recently, number of pc's were increased form 600 to 900, this problem used
to happen frequently.

      problem occured 11/7     once
                      12/15    once
                       1/28    once
                       2/25    twice
                       2/27    once
                       2/28    once
                       3/5     once
                       3/11    4-times
                       3/14    once

      configuration :  Digital UNIX V3.2d-2
                       MailWorks V1.7a-2
                       MAPI V1.0,V1.2

We had some log files(msslog,msrlog,inetgrecvlog). They say "connection
closed with mss or msr" and "defferd mail" in those logs.
We think msr process and mss process have some problem, but we don't know
what happened.

Question;

   How do I collect appropriate information?
   Are there any tools to get information?
   What do I do in this situation?

We think this problem to escalate to proper section, but we have no
information except user did not use mail system.

One other source of possibly-useful information is the dmw.log file (I think
it's called) in the DMW installation directory on the PC where the MAPI driver
is being run.

I have just posted (in note 1368) a script that you should copy
to the user's system. Please run this script once during
the busiest part of the day for the user, even if the problem
is not happening - then save the file session.out under
a different name. Then, if you can, run the script while the
problem is happening. Send me the output from both times.
(Send it to neumann@hotpup.zko.dec.com).

Also, please send me a copy of the msslog (from /var/opt/DMW/logs)
and the msrlog. If those log files are very large, please
include only the entries for the day that the problem occurred
(it will be easier on the mail system). It will help me to know
what time the problem occurred, so that I can look in the right
place in the logs.

Can you leave on PC always connected to the server? If so, when
users report that they are having problems, go to the PC
which is already connected, and first try to open a folder;
then try to read a message; and finally try to send a message to
the same account that the PC is using. This test will tell me
whether the problem is with making a new connection, or if
it affects existing connections.
