386.0. "U-21 Championship - Toulon." by GVA02::LUANDA::Lainsbury (I didn't do it.) Mon May 30 1994 12:49

Anybody got any updates of results from the U-21 Championship
"d'Espoirs" in Toulon this week.

I was in Bandol yesterdy watching England beat Russia 2-0 with goals
from Sinclair (QPR) and Bart-Williams (Wednesday) in the first game.
Also in their group are France and USA who played yesterday as well.

England have a pretty strong team including Redknapp, Fowler, Sol
Campbell, Bruce Dyer, Ray Parlour, Ian Selley - with Ray Wilkins and Dave
Sexton doing the coaching. They won it last year, let's see if they can do it
again.

El Tel also turned up, a free Southern France weekend on FA expenses
can't be bad.

I know Scotland drew 1-1 with Egypt yesterday, and I think the USA lost
in the other game in England's group.

Could you give us Palace fans an update on how Dean Gordon and Bruce
Dyer played? The papers were positive about Dyer (although he did get a
card and an injury) setting up both goals (via a foul and the
    penalty?!) but didn't mention Deano.

    cheers

Re:-1

Dyer seemed to be the lone man upfront in the first half. He did a
lot of running and seemed quite dangerous when he had the ball. His card was
well deserved, a pretty Cantonaesque tackle which the Russians weren't too
happy about. I didn't notice an injury, I thought they pulled him off before
he got sent off...he was getting very frustrated with the ref who was giving
free kicks against him every time he tried to turn his man, and was starting
to get a bit over-physical.

Depite the badly channelled aggression, he did look one of the better
England players, setting up the penalty (Bart-Williams) when just reaching a
long ball before the goalie only to be brought down. I think he might do well
in the Premiership, he's definately a bit speedy.

Gordon played left back and did OK. He didn't have that much to do to
be honest, and every time he got the ball he either pumped it up the line
towards Dyer or passed inside to Redknapp. That was pretty much the game plan
- Redknapp and Bartman playing deep and running the show.

Not name dropping or anything but Ray Wilkins promised he'd come and
play for my team in Geneva next time he was here !

    Andy,

Did jamie Redknapp have a good game?

    Ian.

p.s I once stayed in the same hotel as Ray Wilkins' brother.
I think they must be twins cos they looked very much alike.
    	Sound bloke too.

RE:-2 Yeah I know, I haven't slept since coz I know Ray was really serious.

RE:-1
Redknapp was the best player on the pitch - just played a holding
role in the middle of the park. Should be playing for England in the next
couple of years.

Anyone got a report for these games? Is the competition on a knockout
    or table basis?

No reports but it is on a table basis, Scotland need a draw with
belguim to qualify for the semi-final stages. And if they do I
    believe they'll probably play England.

England played USA yesterday. Has anyone got a result ?
A win would put us in the semis, possibly against Scotland if they beat
Belgium tonight.

Good player, and very good prospect. Unfortunatley our manager at THFC
seems to think he is a foward, or left back and hasnt even tried him in
his best position, and the position he plays for England, at Centre
    Back.

England win for the 4th time in 5 years! Bruce Dyer ends up top scorer
in the tournament with 4 goals, and (for Eagles fans) both he and Dean
Gordon played in all 5 games. Now lets hope Dyer does it for Palace.

    Paul,

Dyer looks like a good buy for the Eagles on this performance. Consider
doing a straight swop for Gordon Watson??

Has anyone got a match report for the final.

> England win for the 4th time in 5 years!

So, it appears that when our players are under 21, we have a team to
compete with the best. Just what happens when these players get older ?
I believe that it is fairly rare for England U-21 internationals ever
to make the full team - anyone care to offer any reasons ?

    RE:Last

Over the years Scotland has had the same problem.

I expect that it's something to do with the fact that when they are
at that stage in their careers they are not usually 1st team regulars
for their clubs,so they don't play as many games as established 1st
team players. When they do make the break through to 1st team and
full international level, they are playing so many games they become
    burnt out.

re: Last few.

Out of England's current 1st team squad, Anderton, Shearer, Le Saux,
Batty, Wise, Gazza, and probably a couple of others, all played in the Toulon
tournament over the years.

In the programme I had (lost it now) there was a list of all players
that had come through to full international level. There was also a list of
all the awards given out every year...fair play...most skillful player etc.

The funniest was 4 or 5 years ago when the most sporting player in
the tournament award went to David Batty !!!!
