    it ??

100.3Rushie in pole position.ESSB::MCUNNIFFEWhere the streets have no nameTue Oct 01 1991 13:4511
My choice for goal of the season so far has to be Rushie's headed goal
against Stoke in the Rumbellows cup last week. What a cracker! Burrows
crossed from the left and there was Rushie with a flick of the head to
leave Fox helpless. That goal would just about shade it from his second
goal in the same game. Tanner had a shot that came off the crossbar and
there was Rushie again to nod the ball home. The average observer might
think it was an ordinary strike but Rushie's astuteness and alertness
made it look so easy. I haven't seen any of Aldo's goals yet but I'm
sure some of them must have been quite spectacular.

Another vote for the Townsend goal.

But if Tanner's shot vs. Stoke had gone in, it would be a
    	contender! What a volley...

But by the end of the season, Mark Hughes will have scored the
season's most spectacular goal. Hopefully it will come on
Saturday as United overcome Liverpool at OT (Oh no! I'm sounding
    	like Martin...Arghhhh!!)

    	Andy.

If it's great goals you want to see then you really must start
    following the mighty Ayr United!!.

In 9 league and 3 cup games so far, Ayr have scored 28 goals and
conceded 17. Some (many) of these goals would win any goal of the
season award. Witness Saturday's game, 3-1 down with 10 minutes to go
and Ayr storm back with some cracking goals. One from Greg Shaw in
particular stands out. He received the ball with his back to goal,
turned the defender behind him and cracked a 25 yard shot past a
despairing goalkeeper. The winning goal in the last minute was the
result of a good build up culminating in a 20 yard rocket into the roof
    of the net.

I could go on but as we have been involved in some high-scoring games,
it's getting a bit difficult to remember all the great goals we've
scored. Just wished the club videoed all our games.

For those of you who saw Miligan's goal for Oldham in the first or
second week of the season, you'll know the previous notes are just
    waffle!!

Miligan was just outside the penalty area on the right hand
side waiting for the cross to come over from the left. It was an inch
perfect cross which Miligan hit first time on the volley. The ball
curved into the far side of the net before the keeper could even move.
It was a goal from the moment it left his boot.

This is another vote for Simon Stainrod's goal at St Johnstone. It was
quite simply the most amazing goal I've seen in 40 years following the
Bairns.St Johnstone had just scored,at the kick-off McAllister touched
the ball to "He Who Must Be Adored" who simply wellied it straight into
the back of the net.Sky didn't have it,but Alex Totten did....and he
    recorded over it!!!!
100.11Nice One SimonMASALA::PMOONFri Oct 11 1991 11:0012

I am afraid I even have to agree with that one.
After the game on the way home, some radio station
interviewed McAllister and he said that just before
the centre Stainrod ran up to him and said to him
just touch it....touch it. Then bang and it was in
the back of the net.Leaving that Fool Hamilton back
    peddling all the way.

I saw Jan Molby's goal for the first time yesterday, and I personally can't see
the point of continuing this topic ;-).

It's going to take one hell of a goal to beat that.

This weekend produced some contenders for #2.

Tony Daley's Volley,
those mentioned in -.1
and my favourite, Gemmill in the same game ( Forests 3rd ) Great team build up
and great chip, after Seaman had been committed

    brilliant!!!
must have been all of 35 yards, 2 minutes into injury time with
the saints 2-1 down in the cup.
the 'pundits' reckoned that the goalie was at fault.
i didnt, i think he did well to get a hand to it.

Limpars shot from the half way line (at least i think it was limpar)

And my personal favorite - Keane's diving header Vs Spurs in the
Runbelows semi 2nd Leg. great power in that one especially when it was
deep into extra time on a strength sapping pitch. (Keane's revenge on

No, come on it has to be Platt's effort against Forest. Volleying home
from a volleyed cross after a move which involved more than three
passes. For an Arsenal fan it was a liberating experience. After that,
    normal service was resumed.
