123.0. "footballing injuries" by KERNEL::HAWLEYI (product of the working class) Thu Nov 28 1991 15:05

    it seems to me that a few teams are having bad injury problems at the
    moment, Man Utd without Sharpe (and a couple of others no doubt),
    Liverpool without most of the team...
    do you think its because of training methods, especially with reference
    to the younger players, or are people tackling harder?
    is there too much of a desire to win inbred into new players, because
    of the financial situation of clubs/rewards of success, by the
    management staff?
    is the playing life of a footballer shorter than it was years ago?
    any thoughts?
    Ian.

123.1Two much Football..DUCK::WILSOND1Thu Nov 28 1991 15:429
    Players are asked to play too much Football now.Two games aweek,is to
    much and for some, they dont get a break from one season to another due
    to International Football.

      Liverpool seem to have suffered more than most, the answer to there
    problems is to stop Grahame Souness playing in the five a-side games in
    training.

    Dave...
123.2Souness == InjuriesSCOAYR::GMCKEEThu Nov 28 1991 15:5611

    When Souness was at Rangers we seemed to be plaqued by injuries. It
    was well known that his training sessions were the hardest in Scotland
    probably because his own level of fitness was very high.
    When Ian Durrant was first coming back to fitness Souness had Terry
    Hurlock marking him to make sure he could take the knocks.
    Now he's gone we still get a few injuries but that's mostly due to
    the pace and the physical nature of the game up here.

I agree with the latter.

We're most certainly playing far too many games in the Barclays League.

What with all these Cup Competions (ZDS as well for Toffee's & the like.Any
trophy will do).

Plus of course all the training that goes along with it!

Sourpuss can't be helping things either!
123.4Cash before players welfare ??MIACT::RANKINEFri Nov 29 1991 21:3213

    When big Jock Wallace was manager of Rangers he used to run them into
    the ground in training eg running up and down sand dunes all day. I
    dont recall The Gers having a particularly long injury list at that time.
    Im not convinced that training is causing the injuries, but more the
    number of games being played, and brining players back from long term
    injury too soon eg Mark Wright recently. I also believe that players
    are not allowed, or willing to, heal properly ie we need for this game
    son, so on you go. I was amazed/disgusted to read in MUFC notesfile
    that Lee Sharpe is playing a make or break game soon which will
    determine whether he is fit, or out of football for good ...if hes not
    totally ready, why risk it ???

The tackling does seem to be a lot harder now. There's plenty of shoulder
charging, shirt pulling and general foul play which the ref allows to go
unnoticed. I thought the idea of a tackle is to get the ball out with your
feet, not to get the player out of your way with your shoulder. - And all
you Man U fans out there know how serious shoulder injuries can be

:-)

    It's a game for namby pamby's now..don't you remember Tommy SMith,
    Graeme Souness, Nobby Stiles, 'Chopper' harris, Billy Bremner, Norman
    Hunter, Maurice Setters etc etc

 Speaking of injuries, does anybody know when Marco Van Basten is due

 to return to the game ?

    In a couple of months, but there is the possibility he will never
    come back.

    As a Milan fan i hope i'm wrong.

    Pino
123.9What about Lentini??????KBOMFG::TANNERMidnight is where the day begins..Thu Nov 18 1993 16:045
  That's probably the main reason Milan haven't been knocking in the goals, their
missing their two best players. Pino how long is Lentini out for????

                                                                 -dave-

    re van Basten
    Marco is recovering from operation and starts training in a short
    while. He expects to be back for Milan half December ! And we expect
    him to be ready in June next year !!!!!

    Dave, Lentini has played for three minutes during last Italian Cup
    match (Milan-Piacenza 1-1).

    So, he should play next sunday against Naples, maybe for half time.

    Pino

   That's good news for Milan, when Lentini is fit he's a joy to watch. And if
he fully recovers he'll walk on to both the Milan and the Italian team.

                                                                     -dave-

    If Lentini can just wait one week to come back, after the match of
    Wednesday. If can do whatever he likes afterwards.

123.14Injuries, Injuries!!!ESSB::MCUNNIFFEEven Better than the Real ThingMon Nov 22 1993 19:307
   We hear so much these days of players being injured. All the greats like
VanBasten, Whelan, Lentini, etc. Throughout my football career, I have never
been seriously injured and I hope it continues that way.

    Terrible...

    Today an italian newspaper says Marco Van Basten won't go to USA 94.
    He is thinking about stopping his football career.

    This also means the end of the Milan power.

    Pino (A frightened Milan fan)
123.18van Basten back in March ?UTROP1::HANSSEN_Jare you serious ?Wed Nov 24 1993 12:4910
    re-1 .17 Don't be afraid....you know italian newspapers...;-)

    Marco went yesterday to his surgeon again, and it didn't look as well
    as they hoped. New date of his comeback : begin March '94. So he could
    be ready for the US......But on the other hand...he hasn't played now
    for almost a year !!!!!

    re Cunno : What kind a football do you play, then...table-football ?

123.19ROMCSA::BIANCHINIDa qui messere si domina la valleWed Nov 24 1993 13:169
    yes, I can confirm that Van Basten has to stop for other 90 days, then
    nobody can say if he'll come back to play.

    The only hope is the thought of Gullit (he said yesterday); Ruud was
    injuried for more than 1 year and now he's the best stranger in italy.

    Let's hope...
