I understand, although I don't read such papers that the Mirror had on its
back page yesterday two pictures and some headline. The two pictures were of a
football, the round type, and a goalmouth, in which you put the ball. The
headline said something like England, here is a foball and here is a goalmouth,
now *score*. They did that but unfortunately by some stretch of the imagination
conceded two very unlucky goals in the second ;-).

What is the reaction, today in the tabloids? Is it "Taylor on your bike" or
some other equally enlighting headline.

If Ireland had been in Englands position last night would they have done much
better. I have my doubts!

    Taylor should go!

Poor tactics, poor substitutions, poor selection, poor postioning......
    .... I could go on!

Having said that several individuals played well Lineker,Woods,Pearce &
Walker - but as a team - no chance!

Well done the Swedes, not the "prettist" football, but they battled
well and made far more scoring chances and deserved their win (and the
    late 1st half penalty)!

You guys sure have short memories. Cant you remember what happened to
Robson. Every major championship England played in the press where one
time or another calling for his head (mexico 86 , Germany 88 and Italy
90). He didnt go , even when the players where saying he was doing the
    wrong thing.

Taylor will not go. His excuse this time will be that he only had half
the players he wanted (one was not asked). Unless a miracle happens and
we can find a goalscorer , we wont be going to the WC. He might go if
we fail to qualify for that. I said before this championship that I
couldnt see who was going to score in that team and now that Gary has
gone , who is going to do it now - Smith - dont make me larf. England
have got to hope that Gazza recovers and that Mr Major ... oops Mr
    Taylor will pick him.

If he goes before then , and I for one wish he would go now , ill eat
    my words.

> For England, there were many lessons to be learned from this game.

As much as I agree with you (and what a game it was !), I fear that
England (well, Taylor) will have learned nothing from this game.

On the way home last night, I was listening to Radio 5 prior to kick
off. They held an interview with Taylor, and here is basically what he
    said.

Overall, he was happy with England performance. If we played against
Denmark like we played against Sweden in the first half, we would have
won. That is why we didn't qualify, because we didn't beat Denmark.

The night before the France game, he thought about letting Daly loose
against the French back (was it Amoros ?). After the game he wished he
had. That is the only thing he would have changed.

He said previously, that when England came out the other side of these
Championships he would have the core of Team to qualify for the World
Cup. He says he has a core of 8 players, including Shearer, Palmer,
    Batty, and Martyn.

He said, as Sweden has shown us, you can be successful with the long
ball game. So that is thy style England are going to adopt, because it
is how the game is played in this country, and we know its strengths.

    End of quotes.

I heard yesterday, that these Soccer Schools of Excellance teach this
    route one method.
    All I can say is,

"Good Luck in the 94 World Cup, Holland and Poland."

    -Dom,

I don't *expect* England to win something, but I do expect them to
play well, and to *do* well. After all, I do not believe that English
players are that bad. I have seen one or two players who, while
not in the class of a Gullit, or Rijkard, are extremely skillful.

What dissapoints me is that it seems that the manager is not up
to the task. What do the English FA ? Do they want a non controversial
'nice' guy ? (Taylor may be that , but I get the feeling he is a
laughing stock) Or do they want a team that has has a good reputation.
Are there any potential managers out there ? Sadly, I cannot think of
    one (except Clough of course).

I dont disagree, the manager is just not up to it. Maybe England

be able to see things from a new clearer perspective.....

    -Dom
233.20Incoherent ramblings....SUBURB::INV_LIBRARYWho hell he?!?Fri Jun 19 1992 17:5231

If you argue that the manager should be held solely responsible, then
presumably this absolves the players of all blame. It seems highly
unlikely to me that, with a different manager (and even perhaps with
Waddle and Beardsley) this set of players would have come up with a
    much different result.

The point here is that, IMO, there is a distinct lack of world class
players in England at the moment and the ones we do have were injured
for this tournament. The game here is twenty years behind the times,
still believing that getting stuck in, knocking the ball down the
channels and looking for flick-ons, is the way to play the game. Last
season's first division was perhaps the most average in my memory, with
the only memorable pieces of skill coming from players like Cantona and
Le Tissier, one a Frenchman and the other considered too lazy (never
mind his skill) to be an England player. Whilst our domestic game is
dominated by strength, toughness and hard running, it seems unlikely
that we'll produce players capable of matching the likes of Holland and
    Germany for skill.

Having said that, I read with some dismay that Taylor is claiming that
one of the reasons England did so poorly is that we are unable to match
the continental teams for athleticism. In other words, nothing to do
with skill, they're simply better athletes than we are. This strikes me
as an extraordinary conclusion, when we have all seen how lacking in
basic skill are our players compared with the other teams in the
championship. We are already playing on a different level to these
other teams; if this kind of thinking takes root, we'll soon be playing
    a different game altogether.

Re .17 Who expects England to win!!!!??? Are you seriously talking about
football???? Or maybe your mixing it up with Polo!!!!!! The only time I would
expect England to win is when they play a team like the Faroe Islands, and come
to think of it they beat Austria 1-0 in the Euro pre-qualifers, and Austria
would give England a hell of a game. Holland beat them 3-2 (only) a couple of
weeks back.

I personally expect a team like Germany to do very well in any tournament
because their record is fantastic. I think most knowledgeable football folks
rarely expect England to do well, and are shocked when they do......

    re .22
Well, it seems more than a few people predicted England to win. I don't
know if they were predicting with their heart, rather than the head. It
seems to me that England's media seems to expect them to win
everything, when, in truth they are a *good* side, but not a great one.
IMO, I rate them in the second tier of clubs, along with say, Belgium,
Czechoslovakia, Denmark, etc., but not in the same class as Holland and
    Germany.

I maintain that Taylor is not the right man for the job. We'll never be
able to compete with the likes of Holland and Germany under his
"style", for want of a better word.

Now, who wants to have a laugh ?

Give the job to DAVID PLEAT !

A man who came up through the ranks like Taylor, learning at grass
roots level with a small club. Unlike Taylor, he has always encouraged
his teams to play football, which is a very good starting point. He's
also used to getting the best out of what's available, which seems to
be an essential attribute as far as England are concerned these days.

He'd also teach our Dutch friends a thing or two about "scoring" ;-)

    Jim.
233.33A change of emphasis..SUBURB::INV_LIBRARYWho hell he?!?Tue Jun 23 1992 18:5624

I hate to be seen to be agreeing with the gutter press but I have to
admit I would rather Taylor was not the England manager. Not because
the team played so badly in Sweden (that was only partly his fault) but
because of some of the worrying things he said after England were
knocked out. His comments concerning the athleticism of foreign
players, about Sweden playing the long ball and his justification of
taking Lineker off all point to a man tactically out of step with world
football. If he continues in the job I can see players like Chapman and
Deane winning twenty odd caps, with the possibility that skillful
players, even Gascoigne, left on the sidelines.

Taylor's belief that English-style football can triumph at
international level is surely flawed and this championship has proved
it. Scotland's performances were achieved through the combination of
hard work AND skill, with McStay being the quality midfielder sadly
lacking from the England team. The belief that ball-winners like Batty
and Palmer, rather than ball-players like Clough, Beardsley and Waddle,
can win you international tournaments, has been shown to be false in
this championship and yet it seems that Taylor intends to persist with
it. For this reason, I feel it would be better if he left now before
Englash football falls further behind the rest of the world.
