    Here's a few from memory...

The Flying Dutchmans (Cruyff) goal against Brazil in the 74 WC with the
    outstretched leg.

Archie Gemmils blinder against Holland in 78, after going past two or
three defenders to slot the ball perfectly past the keeper.

Socrates (Brazil) 30yard pile driver against the Russians in the 86 wc.

Perhaps... One or two of Pele's spectacular goals from 70.

They think it's all over, it is now! Geoff Hurst's winner for England
    in the 66 final.

More pile drivers... Peter Lorimer for Scotland vs Zaire in 74, the
Russian bloke (Rats ???) in 86 against ?, Mattheus (Germany) against
Yugoslavia in 90 and the Paraguayian (sp) goal by ? (Cubos???) against
    Scotland in 78.

Surely Maradonna's dribble past six England players and their Goalie
    in Mexico!

There can be no other goal that comes even close to that one...

Hugo Sanchez for Mexico in '86
Great 1-2 and then a perfect scissors kick all without the ball
    	touching the ground.

Well, I think there should be to categories:

One category which talks about the 'dribble past 22 players' type of
    goal

Another category which talks about the spectacular volleys,
    half-volleys, scissor kicks etc...

My vote for the category one has to go to Maradona's second goal
against England only because I don't think any other player has beaten
that many players and scored a goal. Mind you, I thought the English
players were just standing/falling/watching in front of Maradona and
just let him to whatever he wanted.

My vote for the second category has to go to either the Rivelino or
Gerson (I forget which one) of Brazil's strike for the third goal
in the '70 World Cup Final against Italy. A very sweet strike of a
moving ball, swerving, kept low and hit with such venom. Textbook stuff
    Ooo lah-lah !!!!

    Regards,

It was cubelas (SP??) for Peru. And yes it was a great free kick. Rough
had no chance.

How about that bananna kick that Stoikovich (sp?) scored for Yugoslavia
vs Spain in 1990. It was off a free kick and he ripped the ball just
where a Spanish defender in the wall had just moved his head. He probably
    would have been decapitated!

There was also a Korean who scored a fantastic goal off a volley that's
    worth mentioning

The best has to be the Costa Rica goal against Scotland and Schilaci
(Sp?) against Eire in 92, a couple of real beauties.

OTHERS:- Bobby Charlton V Mexico in 1966 or Josimar V N Ireland. Those
are off the top of my head, anyway.

267.12...by Eder, Brazil - USSR, WC '82MR4DEC::JBENOITMon Oct 19 1992 16:5914
I've seen some great goals in world cup competitions. The one that I keep
seeing over and over again in my mind was scored by Eder for Brazil against
USSR, in the '82 WC finals. It was a powerful shot that followed a very
elegant set up, and the defending keeper was none other than the very
impressive Dassaev (sp?).
That was a text book kind of goal. However, that same world cup delighted
us with many other beautiful goals, some scored from free kicks (as a few of you
mentioned already).
I don't know how the experts will decide which goal was the best. But I am
looking forward to this topic, hoping it will remind of goals that I have
forgotten. Memories of great goals are always pleasant (more so when they
weren't scored against one's favorite team).

The greatest goal in World Cup history is certainly the one scored by
    ROBERTO BAGGIO during ITALIA-CECOSLOVACCHIA 2-0 in 1990.
He starts from midfield jumping a lot of ceki and after let the goal-
keeper sit down with a fantastic "body movement", he scores the goal.

I've got to agree with .7.

    That goal had everything.

    Another couple of long-range beauties

Arrie Han (Sp?) for Holland in '78 - It must of been from
    all of 45 Yards out.

Falcao for Brazil v Italy in that memorable '82 Qtr-final
the veins in his arms nearly popped out.

Remember '70 when Pele completly dummied the keeper and
put the ball just wide. If it had gone in it would surely have
    been a candidate.

    Another few good ones

Dav Narey's Goal against Brazil in 82
Archie Gemmels goal against Holland in 78
Maradonna's header against England in 86
267.17EC 1988 super goal!!!ELIS::GEELENWed Oct 21 1992 17:2813
One very nice goal (But not a World Cup match) was that of
Marco van Basten in the European Cup final.
(HOLLAND vs RUSSIA 2-0 in 1988)

A great pass by Arnold Muhren across the field and than.......

van Basten shot it right out of the air into the goal.

By the way, he was standing 1.5 yards from the 'out line'
Dasaev had absolutely now chance !!

I hope this entry is allowed in here!

267.18Yeah! I remember Harry Hann.LEBEAU::BENOITThu Oct 22 1992 16:5220
    re .15

Yeah! I remember Harry Hann in '78. I also remember the
Vandekerkoff (sp?) twins, always dangerous from long distance.

Falcao's goal was also a beauty.

I watched Pele's miss against Uruguay again for the 1000th time. I
still can't tell if he dummied the goalie or if he instinctively
followed up on the ball. I guess they both result in the same thing: a
    highly spectacular play.

One spectacular goal that most noters here probably won't remember
was scored by Colombia against Germany. Germany was up 1 nothing with
almost no time left in the game. Colombia (I believe) needed a tie to
qualify for the next round. At the last minute a Colombian forward scored
by passing the ball between the german keeper's legs.

267.21Jan Farkas 1966 ?JUMBLY::WOODWARDThu Nov 26 1992 20:2213

1966 - Jan Farkas for Hungary v (Brazil, or possibly Portugal) at
Goodison Park. Always figures in retrospectives of the '66
competition - perhaps not one of the very greatest, and Brazil
were certainly way below their best, but the goal typified a
side daring to play with complete abandon against Brazil (or
           Portugal).

           A joy to watch.
