There probably are more ... I just don't know.
Ratsherren Cup:
Spartak Moscow - Bundeswehr 4:3 Slavia Prague - Hamburger SV 4:1
St.Pauli - Moscow 1:0 Slavia Prague - VfL 93 4:1
Bundeswehr - RW Erfurt 6:4 VfL 93 - B.Tatabanya 3:2

Spartak Moscow - RW Erfurt 6:1 Slavia Prague - B.Tatabanya 4:4
St.Pauli - Bundeswehr 2:2 Hamburger SV - VfL 93 2:1
Semifinals
St.Pauli - Hamburger SV Slavia Prague - Spartak Moscow
5 - 1 4 - 0
3rd Place
Slavia Prague - Hamburger SV
6 - 3
Final
Spartak Moscow - FC St.Pauli
2 - 1
Quite good result, for St.Pauli played with 4 professionals only, the
other 6 players were recruited from St.Pauli's 4th Division amateur
team.
St.Pauli has not made it to the master on their own, still they can
qualify - depending on the results of the other indoor tournaments.

Very sad news. Volker wasn't only an excellent goalie during our 1st

He always kept his good relation to the supporters, and this is the major
strength of St.Pauli.
I remember well the first time I say him playing - about 82, before he
went to Nicaragua for a year (guess it was against Holstein Kiel, a 3rd

Good luck Volker, we'll never forget you

It's always the same story with this kind of clubs.
1st stage: An average-talented team, an ambitious sponsor,
lot of new players bought, surprising success
and lot of media noise.
2nd stage: The sponsor looses his interest or gets bankrupt, the
players start looking for a new employer, no more
success and the team moves back to his roots (say,
5th or 6th division)
I'm sorry to say this, but it's nothing new in the region of
Hamburg. Remember Hummelsbuettler SV? Remember SV Lurup (where my
cousin played for some years)? They both came from 6th division,
had a lot of success (played even the qualification round for
the 2nd league) and now they are where they started from.
The only team I'm really missing is Concordia Hamburg (for their
excellent work with young, talented players).

There were talented players in the former GDR ....
Dynamo Dresden was the *only* team, not to sell their players to the
rich western clubs.
Some examples:
Sammer -> VfB Stuttgart -> Milan (next season)
Doll -> Hamburger SV -> Lazio (last season)
Thom -> Leverkusen
Kirsten -> Leverkusen
Rohde -> Hamburger SV
Kruse -> Frankfurt
Hansa Rostock suffered under their egocentric manager Kische, who
always interfered in the team's affairs. The very much respected coach
Uwe Reinders had too leave after long months of quarrels, rumors and
intrigues (sp?).
Brandenburg, Erfurt, Halle as former GDR clubs dropped out the
2.Bundesliga.
Remaining:
Bundesliga: Dynamo Dreseden
2.Bundesliga Hansa Rostock
FC Jena
Chemnitzer FC
VfB Leipzig
and maybe 1 coming up, possibly Union Berlin or FC Magdeburg.
Uerdingen is a suburb/part of Krefeld wich lies at the river rhine.

Surprising that Lurup is so strong in these times. I remember they

descent began.
But without money it's hard to survive even in the 3rd division

them in the Oberliga Nord with 200 visitors or so). So, is there

only 3 weeks to go for next years round (or don't they start at

My expectations are quite positive, but a bit sceptical, too. With
24 teams (= 46 matches) we need a very long breath, but I hope that
our new coach will give St.Pauli another push to the top - as he
did some years ago. The relegates from 1st division won't be too
strong - except from Duisburg - (who's afraid of Rostock or Dusseldorf?)
but only 2 teams qualifying for 1st division is a bloody hard
selection.

right ( it must be Heiko......I guess...). I 've been to HSV a couple

sport of Hamburgers : pulling Bavarians there leather pants out) !
There they said that St Pauli was a club of Hooligans and bad

I felt it as unfriendly when I was there.....different from a couple of

crowd of HSV so much different ????? HSV behaves as the club with more
status but St Pauli proved always to have more guts ; didn't they win
enormously last year in the Ratsherren ( Pilsener ?) tournament ?
And the whistling is something that belongs to Hamburg : I have always
seen them as a crowd that favours the sport. When a team plays bad ( or
have a bavarian background...;-)) they whistle, the good team gets
applause ! Never mind if it is the home team or the opponents.
Examples : when Ajax won, they were cheered by the whole crowd, and HSV
was whistled out.......

re: -3
Things said by Hamburger SV supporters should be regarded as
subjective feelings, I think. There has always been slight enmity
between HSV and St.Pauli and with increasing success of our team
this has become even stronger. I just would answer with another
subjective statement: if you like to meet skinheads and headbangers,
HSV is better for you - because Millerntor is nazi-free zone.
re: -2,-1
Maybe you're both right - but I think that's normal. I have seen some
outward matches last year (e.g. at Fortuna Koeln and Uerdingen) but
haven't been at the Millerntor for even one game. My impression is:
there are still a lot of folks traveling around with the team
and they support St.Pauli as strong as they ever did, but it's
not that "fashionable" to be a "St. Paulianer" as it was two years
ago - and those thinking in "Whats In? Whats Out?" categories start
changing their minds. But it doesn't bother me too much - IMO those
guys/girls from the red light zone and Hafenstrasse punks are more
dependable than young lawyers and yuppies from advertising agencies.
So maybe we have to pass harder times but I still believe in the
spirit of St.Pauli.

HSV has always been the rich club. It isn't rich at all these days,
but still they're having their home in Harvestehude, which definetely
is one of parts of Hamburg, where the rich and famous live. They used
to have their training campus at the Rothenbaumchaussee in
Harvestehude, right opposite to the Rothenbaum Tennis Courts, near to
the University. As they were in heavy financial trouble last year they
had to sell it, they got DM 10,000,000 for it - from the city of
Hamburg. Who knows, what a private man would have given. After all,
HSV still has the character and attitude of a rich, hanseatic sports
club. They were German Champions twice in the 80ies and won the EC.
They had players like Thomas Doll, Manfred Kaltz, Felix Magath,
Kevin Keegan and Uwe Seeler. All well known, even outside of Germany.
FC St.Pauli, on the other hand, is located in St.Pauli. A working class
district of old, a red-light district of international reputation.
The Millerntor is right next to the Heiligengeistfeld, a traditional
Circus and Entertainment place. The Reeperbahn is 300 meters away from
there, DEC Hamburg 1km :-). Little green, occupied rotten houses,
black, red and blue-dyed hair, Cabarets and night-clubs, that is
the neighborhood of FC St.Pauli. Volker Ippig and Klaus Gerber are the
famous players. No one ever made it to the German national squad.
I'm not sure, if St.Pauli ever was German Champion. If they were, the
year 1911 is correct, I think. The greatest success in history was the
1:0 against Bayern in Munich 2 years ago. They have never been more
than an ordinary site. The 'Volksfest'-atmosphere and their will
to give everything (of the little they had) made St.Pauli something
special.
Cheers,

That's what I meaned with status ; HSV was the rich club. And yes, the
skinheads took care that I didn't visit HSV anymore for a long time.
My friends however, former HSV fans, tend more and more to St Pauli.
They sometimes go to HSV because they play in the Bundesliga.
And was St Pauli not the first club that took action against skinheads
this year ?
You surely convinced me of visting the Millerntor ( next to the DOM ?)

Didn't Nicolic and Driller find a 1st divisioner - I thought they

Where does Sailer play next year (I have in mind he was in

What about "Otti" (I remember him definitely changing to

The players mentioned in the list - Otti, Nicolic and Driller - are
in the squad. The transfer market closes on Jun 30th, I think.
Sailer went to
MSV Duisburg.
(I think)
What a miserable transfer. That's no improvement for him *at all*.
At least St.Pauli got DM 800,000 for him - they bought him for DM
50,000 a year ago.

on TV, but St.Pauli never gave up the fight so the draw was OK.
Yesterdays "Hamburger Abendblatt" gave the new players Schwinkendorf
(sp?) and Jeschke good critics, so there are some talents again.
This makes me more optimistic, since you need more than 11 good
players for such a long season.
Next match against Darmstadt should be different, but not easy, too.
I bet they will play very defensive and go for draw. I'm not sure
what will happen if there are twenty or more players in Darmstadt's
half for the whole time (My prediction is as 1-0, but it could be
also a 0-0).

A goalless draw is always somehow disappointing, but it was achieved
against the strongest defense in the 2nd league (nobody scored even
one goal against Leipzig in the first four matches). Leo Manzi played
quite well in the 2nd half when he substituted Martin Driller, who
was not that strong.
The Millerntor was completely sold out with 20,500 spectators.
Next game is against Wuppertaler SV on saturday and I will definitely
join the St.Pauli crowd, because it's only 100 km from my hometown

| Wuppertaler SV - FC St.Pauli 3 - 0
I can't remember another match I've been to as worse as this one.
St.Pauli had only one real chance (2' by Aerdken) and the defense
was terribly bad. All goals were scored from short distances when
St.Pauli defenders were far away from their opponents. Forget the
game, but everything else was great.
Wuppertal has an very old stadium which is located near the center
of town with a lot of bars next door. Since noon those were occupied
by St.Pauli fans singing, drinking and enjoying themselves, but
never aggressive or violent. Somebody said sometimes ago, St.Pauli
matches are not a party anymore, but I can't confirm to this.
Though it was 350 km to travel from Hamburg, 1500-2000 supporters
came over to Wuppertal and nobody really cared about the awful
game. Instead of whistling they were singing "So ein Tag, so
wunderschoen wie heute" (the typical hymn after glorious won matches)
even when there was absolutely no chance left for a draw and at the
end the team got a lot of applause.
And another short story (which would have been worth to be documented
by german TV): Next to our block stood a group of Wuppertal right-
wing supporters who had put a German World War II banner at the
fence. Some of us demanded "Take that flag away!". To clarify their
mindset, those Ultras came to the fence, raised their right arms
(which was called "Hitlergruss" in former times) and exclaimed some
paroles. Now the whole St.Pauli crowd started shouting for minutes
"Nazis raus" and "We don't want no Nazi pigs" with ever increasing
loudness - until two policemen went over to those chaps and removed
the banner. This was one of those moments when I was really proud
to be a St.Paulianer (and a big point for Wuppertal police).

| Though Bonn is a little town and our local press is quite provincial,
sometimes they can hear the grass grow:
>> Our local newspaper from Bonn asserted yesterday that there was a
>> vote within the team pro/con coach Lorkowski and that it resulted
>> in a clear majority against him.
This was a short episode - I didn't expect that when he started his job
in summer and I was sure he was the right man for St.Pauli. But IMO he
made a lot of mistakes so the decision was correct:
- always changing the offensive players doesn't rise flexibility
but it makes them feel uncertain - not only the young ones
- the defense was as unstable as never before - all his steps to
improve this (changing the libero etc.) brought up nothing.
Now the decision is made without long discussions and delays and there
is still enough time to change things during this years season.
>> Don't know how things will proceed - maybe with a revival
>> for Helmut Schulte ?
This was originally ment as a joke, but everytime I think about it, it
sounds more like a good idea to me: Helmut is still without a contract,
so he would be directly available, his popularity is another important
factor and if the sad story of the lost son (shut out by some corrupt
managers) gets a happy end with his glorious revival this would fit
well into St.Pauli's ambiente, wouldn't it ?
With rising curiosity,

According to out local newspaper St.Pauli may have difficulties in
fielding an even average side on Sunday in Mainz:
Martin Driller

Karsten Surmann

Bernhard Olck

Leonardo Manzi

Bernd Hollerbach

too many players, which cost lots of money and I don't know whether
the receipts can equalize that (haven't read the Abendblatt for weeks

But perhaps this would be the end of it all ? St.Pauli has some

result. Maybe we have a chance to meet at the big St. Pauli/1860 party

What was that with the Pauli/1860 Party ? I haven't heard of it, yet.
And, well, actually I'm not soooooo much a Pauli-fan as far as
attending the matches is concerned. I kind of follow them on the
telly and in the Hamburger Morgenpost :-). Also, I don't hate the
Hamburger SV, as every serious Pauli-fan does :-).
So, tell me more about that party, please.

| All the details about the party!!
There is a biiig friendship between the St. Pauli Fans and
the 1860 fans. So, when St. Pauli played in Munich last
year, the 60 fans arranged a big party for their friends
from Hamburg in one of the big Munich beer halls.
In April, 1860 has to play in Hamburg. And apparently big
preparations are already underway to arrange for an even
bigger party in Hamburg. Since I will be there anyway, I
want to see the game and, of course, go to the big fest.

So that was the end of the series.
St.Pauli's last two defeats have both been against Wuppertal.
They almost made half of the season undefeated, almost.
Hopefully the morale is still there. Away in Jena next week.
Bad news of the day is that goalkeeper Andreas Reinke might be off to
Kaiserslautern next season. Odd. He has a valid contract until 1995,
but for 2.Bundesliga only. So if St.Pauli gets promoted, he could go.
Apparently Kaiserslautern has made a promising offer, although Reinke
would then be second man behinf Gerry Ehrmann. I wonder if that makes
sense. Being first man in a second rate team is better than being
second man in a first rate team (in my book). Money ??
Well it's just a rumour.

I know this is not the proper topic. But after having celebrated with
Pauli fans on the Reeperbahn 3 weeks ago (St. Pauli / 1860: 2:1), it
seems ok to put my comment here. Yes, the lions were lucky to win last
night's game. No, I am not sure, if I want to see them promoted after
their first season in the second league. On the other hand ...

| What would you do? They came so far, actually it would be a shame if
they didn't get promoted!!!!
But I promise I won't cry, if they don't. Because I think they had a
fantastic season and didn't disappoint their fans one bit. Yesterday, I
read in last year's "Kicker Special" (which appeared at the begin of
the season) what 1860's only goal was. It said: stay in the second
league at any price. And now: up at the top!
So let's see what happens tomorrow.
Regards,
Margit
PS. Did St. Pauli somehow arrange for that red card for Wolfsburg's
striker??

Ha! The Lions don't even have a topic of their own in this glorious
conference. The Kiez-Kickers have, and they're in line with such
glorious teams as W.B.A., Lithlilillingolorowowow Rose Magic Team and
Peterborough United FC. :-)
As for the red card (or is he suspended for his 7th booking) :
no influence.
You're surely referring to that DM 50,000 story that made it to the
media the other day. What a crappy idea. That's plain bribery and I'm
happy they've realised it, after all.
Well there's always next year. I'd like to see 1860, Wolfsburg and
Meppen/Leipzig/Brandenburg to get promoted next year.
St.Pauli are actually not as good as their league position indicates. I
doubt we could be that succesful in the nexty season. 1860 could. So
we need to have the luck to get promoted this time, who knows when the
chance will be there again.

Apparently they're expecting 10,000 Loewen for the game in Meppen so
they've arranged a fest tent in the Market Place.

policing 10,000 to a manageable task.

Wolfsburg are top of the league, St.Pauli is second.
St.Pauli is in excellent physical shape now, and if they manage

the break they look good for promotion.
