663.0. "Labelled as what it isn't" by EVETPU::CANTOR (This is not all rock and roll, dude.) Fri May 05 1989 09:20

Inspired by 659.11

Ah yes, reference cards. I've seen multi-page booklets entitled "mumble
Reference Card". I guess this is a case of an item being labelled
something it isn't. It seems like 'reference card' has almost become
a name for something that serves a particular reference function, rather
than just for a card that is used for reference. I've seen pocket
reference guides too big to fit into any pocket I've ever seen.

Another thing labelled something it is not, though in a different sense,
is a door through which someone wishes that you do not pass. It might have
a sign stating "Not a door."

    `Handbook' is my least favourite. I've seen self-styled `handbooks'
that you'd need a fork-lift truck to move.

But that doesn't mean I want to see `reference' adopted in British
English with the meaning `source of reference material'. I'll happily
put the single word `reference' on the cover of a reference manual. But
to me the book will still be a reference manual (to which there may be
    references).

When I am watching golf on the telly I often think that Severiano
Ballesteros should be called Automatic Ballesteros, because of the
way his brother is oft referred to as Manual.
