    Brainstorming Help

    I'm working on a project that is designing a user-interface for a
new product. As part of this project we have to generate a vocabulary
that will be used in the user-interface and various descriptions about
how the product works and how the product can be used.

We need words to describe materials, tools, and other things. The
product itself conveys creativity, craftmanship, artistry, community,
    and learning.

    So words like -

paint, brush, canvas, easel, studio, gallery

    or

paper, pen, sketches, notes, manuscript, publish, bookstore, library

I know this is not much to go on but a little brainstorming would help
    us out!

The product as you may guess is web/internet related and so it is
electronic. We want to avoid using the vocabulary of the implemenation
technology in the description of the product functionality and use.

Suggestions of other conferences or strategies would be welcome.

    thanks,
    chuck

Have you considered talking to representative users to listen to what
words they use to describe their own jobs, how they do them, what they
like about them, and what they don't? Perhaps visit a local graphic
arts studio, school, or whatever is applicable. You could always hire
one of those experienced users, too, and put him or her in charge of
the UI. That often works miracles.

Without knowing much about the product, here are a few others:

Palette, color wheel, tint, graphic, canvas, medium, palette knife, paint
box, charcoal, fixative, crayon, round, flat (brush types), calligraphy,
illumination, vellum, parchment, trace, print, etch, stencil, mezzotint,
lithograph, monotype, monoprint, printing press, wash, wash or "sky" brush.

    re: .2

We are involving the users in the process. The developers and marketing
folks are taking the user involvement seriously to the point where I
don't have to "sell" the need.

I posted the note to try to get some help in generating stimulus
material for the users and developers. The product that is being
created is a type of electronic document that has-- a presentation
(a layout and organization in multiple layers), links, and active
elements (agents). The document itself needs a name.

I still need the help so suggested words, strategies or sources would
    be appreciated.
