    The AI centre in Sydney, downunder, came up with a theme for their
    nodes.
    All are the word 'knowledge' in various languages..
    
    erfare, urisko, chisik....
    
    
    We in SPR SWS/Engineering decided to do much the same. Our group
    _was_ known as SPARC (South Pacific Applications R&d Centre) so
    the first node is LAMHRA which is Lebonese for a sparK
    next came CHISPA - spanish
    and Shrara - Arabic.  Provided no-one nicks it, our cluster server
    will be 
    
    ECLAT - french for a burst or lightning which = a big spark
                                                 
    
    But the winner would _have_ to be Jeff Goodenough's NEARLY
    
    as in NEARLY::GOODENOUGH.
    
    perhaps yours should be SIMPLY::DEVINE   :-)  (its not used in my
    data base)
    
    Ah that's meant to be simply::dIvine of course, not an aspersion
    on your capabilities......

     I wanted to be the first to vote for NEARLY::GOODENOUGH!
     
     My second favorite was CALLME::INDESCRIBABLE; the node is
     real, but I don't think the username was. :-)
     
     I think GIDDAY:: describes its geographic location in an
     interesting way.

    One of the people in my group requested *and got* "DEC::"
    much to everybody's surprise.

    I don't know what it is now, but a past incarnation of VOGON had
    node number 42.42

    Correction to .5, that should have been FORTY2.

    If I were still an editor, my VAXstation would be called CUSTOS. (But
    if I were an editor I wouldn't _have_ a VAXstation).

    I like it!  I wish I had considered that when wracking my brain
    for a name last year.  I really wanted COMEDY::DEVINE but someone
    had that.
    
    Here's a partial list of all the names I tried:

    You could consider our node name.  Although not a slick as NEARLY::
    (I'll vote for it as the integrated node and user combo), MISFIT
    does discribe many of the Digital employees I have met.
    
    Me? I'm as norm..norm..normal as an..an..anybody!

    Ours are assigned so we have such wonders as KAOFS ... perfectly
    logical ... KANATA OFFICE FIELD SERVICE ... but perfectly boring.
    
    So, I look at all these people with real node names and hear people
    talk of real node names and want to cry!!!

    I've been keeping track of a few of my favorites with the following
    procedure since I had to name a VS2000.  Most are self-explanatory;
    LBLOOM and NORAB are for Joyce fans, KYZYL for Feynman fans, RIK is
    my name (initials, actually), KABEL is my family name.  Other names
    that I considered are THESIS, ARSIS, EIRON, and ALAZON.
    
    I named my workstation FOOBAR, thinking that I grabbed a great
    name.  Every day or so, I have all my security alarms go off
    when someone tries out a new program, and uses my nodename for
    a test!  Methinks this is why the name was available when I grabbed
    it.
    
    Feel free to put your own favorite names into the procedure below,
    or use any of the names in it.  If you choose any from the short
    list, let me know if your local police let you keep it.

    When the Sydney RDC was scratching around for a node name for our
    MicroVAX boot node, one of the guy's suggested THEPOO (pronounced
    "the poo") 'cos that's what we kept getting in.  Strangly enough,
    the name was approved and registered, much to our surprise!
    
    We also has two nodes named in succesion - THEONE and THETWO.

    	"51" is a local brand of pastis, and I was the original system
    manager for node FIFTY1. I tried to get number 51.51 for it, but there
    was some silly idea that 50-59 was reserved to Portugal, so it ended up
    as 51.115.

    I used to be in a group which had the node name UGLY::  and all
    user names were the first names of the individuals.  I guess it was
    all right if you had thick skin, but I thought it was a bit of black
    humor.  As far as I know, that system has been decommissioned and the
    node name is up for grabs.
    
    Before I came up with my present node (GRNDAD::) I tried for ROCKY
    (ROCKY::STONE ??) but found that there was a whole series of ROCKY::,
    ROCKY1::, ROCKY2::, etc.

    Apart from the theological connotations, it has added significance
    because it is the Cockney rhyming-slang name for a useful disinfectant
    -- i.e. bug-eliminating -- substance ... Chloride-of-Lime.

    I don't know if the E-net has these for node names anywhere, but the
    University of Houston has a cluster with node names ASTRO::,  GEORGE::,
    and ELROY:: with an alias of JETSON::.
    
    I have always thought a good cluster would consist of nodes MACTHE::,
    GINSU::, POCKET::, and BOWIE:: with an alias of KNIFE::

    We had a cluster in Littleton with the name of Runway. The cluster
    members were Cessna, Beech, Piper, and Mooney. There were a lot of
    pilots on the project, who were able to get together and form a working
    plurality at the naming convention. The majority disagreed among
    themselves and so lost their chance at any other naming scheme. 

       Mimi Struck is on node THUNDA::.
       
       (It had been suggested to her that she try for node DUMB::, but
       she thought it was not a career-enhancing idea.)

    The COOKIE name is a cluster composed of cookie-related names.
    We have FUDGE, NEWTON, OREO, and CRUMBS currently form the cluster.
    Why CRUMBS?  Well, it was created by gathering together unused,
    spare parts to make a complete computer!
    
    Then there's the SLUM cluster at CXO...

    TURRIS::NODENAMES (now write-locked) has the stories behind some
    of the node names mentioned here.
    
    When I was UGLY::SIMON, our secretary did not like it at all to
    be UGLY::GAIL.  Before that, I lived for a while on the ALIEN::BEING::
    cluster.

    I've always been kinda' fonda' DECWET and DECEAT, node names for
    systems belong to MSB located respectively in Seattle and Littleton.
    If you don't get it, consider the weather in Seattle, and its coastal
    proximity.  Apply an analogous transformation to the Littleton node.

The Rusty I know of in Reading is one Elspeth Bell, who is indeed a
    redhead, and known as Rusty Bell. Groan.
    
    As well as NEARLY::GOODENOUGH, and CALLME::MR_TOPAZ, which are both
    too good to be real, I have heard there is a guy called CURLY on
    a node called SHORTN.
    
    Here in Welwyn (pron. Wellin) we have kept the prefix WEL on our
    node names, which has brought various possibilities:
    
    WELFED, which you use after lunch in the canteen
    WELCUT, for after lunch in the pub
    WELPST, same thing - or is that one for starting rumours?
    WELLIE, salesmen never use this one of course
    WELHNG, you should be so lucky!

    There used to be a SEMI::, too; in fact, I think it was a router for
    COLON:: at one point, so some lucky people could give their network

    ordered out of existence by someone Higher Up. Don't know whether they
    thought it was tacky, or just figured it would lead to too much
