544.0. ""state" dinners" by COOKIE::DEVINE (Bob Devine) Tue Jul 26 1988 08:48

You've all heard of "Baked Alaska", an ice-cream dessert.
And if someone talks of a "Baked Idaho" you would probably
recognize it as a baked potatoe.

I propose that you joyoflexers suggest what "Baked <state>"
would be. The only rule is that it has to be some sort
of food item (edible or not!) so you can't say that a
"Baked New York" is July in the city...

Well, a "Baked Rhode Island" is a food that even somebody down-under
    can understand....
Pity about Oz state names being so unimaginative, we can't have
    any fun at all.

When I was in Cairns last year (actually in Palm Cove...) I had a
dessert that was so sweet it makes sugar seem dull by comparison.
It was white and fluffy, sort of like a cross between a cake and a
meringue. I think of it as "Queensland Dessert," but I'd be glad
to think of it as Baked Queensland if that would help the game.

I figure that cod cakes would be Baked Massachusetts. Cod is much
associated with the Bay State. Now someone will object that cod cakes
are fried; but you put them in the oven to stay warm, and so they're
half-baked -- which is why.

Baked Arizona is redundant. Which leads me to remember the "baby
puppy" note, which leads to the probable ingredient for "Baked
    Arizona"...

    G'day,

Oz states _are_ a bit awkward, but with a little imagination...

    Let's see

Baked Tasmania would be baked apples
Baked South Australia would be Mulled wine
Baked Victoria would be Fried soft cheese
Baked New South Wales would be Rooburgers
Baked Queensland would be bananas and ice-cream
Baked Western Australia would be beercake
Baked Northern Territory would _have_ to be (crocodile) Dundee cake
Baked Christmas Island would be a portion of plum pudding floating
    in custard or rum
Baked Torres Straits Island would be something very alcoholic that
would have anyone in some straits quickly
Baked Norfolk Island would be Hard Tack (from the penal colony that
    once existed)
    and
Baked Australian Capital Territory (sort of = Washington DC)
meringue eaten straight from the oven - full of fluff and hot air.

I'm stumped for Baked Lord Howe Island

That covers the states and dependent territories , I think.(hope
    :-) )

I thought Baked Arizona was another name for Roadrunner Road Pizza?

    Re: .9

Thank you, I knew it had a real name.

I would add Australian wine [mmmmmm], Sydney harbor prawns, and
Queensland butter to the list of Australian contributions to
civilization. You guys know how to *live*.
