834.0. "BBYO (AZA/BBG Alumni) Note" by CECV01::ISRAELITE () Wed Nov 22 1989 13:10

I spent 4 years in AZA when I was in highschool. I still have several
friends that I made then. I was wondering if there are any other
BBYO alumni out there. Do AZA and BBG still exist? Are they still
as popular as they were when I was in it (1967-1970).

I was in the South Jersey Region -- District 3.

I, too, spent 4 years in AZA (1963-67). And like yourself I still have
    friends from that experience.

I was in Metro Council(?), North Jersey Region, District 3.

I know BBYO is still pretty active in North Jersey, and recently saw
a notice of an AZA dance (ahh...fond memories). I'm not sure about
    BBG.

You could find out more info by contacting a local B'nai Brith Lodge.

I am also an AZA alumnus: Heart of Ohio AZA in Columbus, Ohio,
1964-1968. Unlike previous respondents, I don't remember the
district number but the district comprised chapters in Ohio,
    Indiana, and Kentucky.

There is no AZA in Colorado Springs. I have no idea if it still
    exists in Ohio.

I was in the Gilead Chapter (#239) of AZA in Milwaukee. BBYO still
exists. My younger sister was an adviser to a BBG group.

I was in AZA in Detroit 1960-1966. I don't remember the chapter
    number,just the fond memories.

834.5Milton - Al Jolson ChapterFDCV01::ROSSSun Nov 26 1989 13:4115
I was in Al Jolson AZA, in Milton, from around 1956-1959. The chapter
    number, I believe, was 858.

All I have to do to confirm the chapter number is schlep down to
the walk-in closet in my cellar and look at my not-so-very-clean
    AZA jacket.

But it's Sunday, and I'm especially lazy today.

Besides, if my wife sees me going downstairs unencumbered, she'll
manage to find a basket of dirty clothes for me to put in the washing
    machine. :-)

Let's play a little Jewish Geography...

For 834.1 -- Do you know any of the Neiditchs (Steve and older)
Alan Winters, Steve Cahn. Are they alive?

For 834.3 -- I knew someone from Milwaukee named Paul Roczatcher
or something like that. He would be between 37 and 40. I met him
in the summer of 1968. I don't know what chapter he was in.

I (used to) know Alan Winters, if you mean the one from Jersey City
whose father owned the seafood business. Have not had word of his
demise so I must assume he still lives. I don't recall the name
"Neiditch" but do recall the "Niedycks' (spelling suspect but
phonetically correct) specifically Alan J. N________ . He was something
like an assistant District Advisor. He was recently (early Nov.) named
as Director of the Jewish Federation of Somerset County (N.J.).
Steve Cahn sounds familiar but I can't recall any details. I do have a
dear friend who is a former Jersey City BBG - will test her memory.

BTW- How do you know these folks?

I was in AZA in both Pittsburgh (Stanton AZA in 1973-74) and Tucson
(Brandeis AZA, 1974-76), as well as Tempe BBYO (a joint AZA-BBG
chapter) in 1976. The latter 2 were in Mountain Region. Any other
    Pittsburghers or Tucsonians out there?

I don't remember the chapter number for Stanton, but Brandeis was
chapter #999 (rather easy to remember).

I was involved with a number of District events, so I encountered
them all a few times a year. Alan Winters was the District Godol
at my first District Convention -- I though he was a G-d. Steve
Nei... was the District Godol in my last year.

I recall Winters being District Gadol, and I'm trying desparately to
remember what we did to him at convention - I'm sure it was rather
    ugly.

In answer to your title...Yes, I'm from Jersey. I was a member (A.G.
one year) of the Newark (Felix Fuld?) Chapter, from 1963 - 67.

Since you were active in the late 60's, do you remember a Steve Freid ?
Also a Jersey City boy, he was a "macher" at District.

Did you ever attend "Sweetheart" weekend in Jersey City?
Ever make the rounds of the Saturday Night Dances? Ever see my chapter
get kicked out of a Dance? Ever see a bus carrying my chapter to a
dance get met at the town line by the local cops? - before the dance?!?

Here's one you might re-call: At District convention, did you ever see
North Jersey Region yell "Shut Up, Mel" at Abe Beacon (BBYO Admin.)?

I always wondered who paid for the damages at the Camp that hosted
    convention!

In Albuquerque, New Mexico I belonged to the Temple Albert Society of
Temple Youth (TASTY) -- really! We were part of SWFTY (Southwest
Federation of Temple Youth). Anyone else from that part of the world
    circa 1968-70??

I was in Dafna BBG in DC council, Northern Region, District 5 ('69-
'73). I am a Lifetime member and recieved the Star of Deborah (for
doing lots of stuff during my 4 years!)

I was N'siah of my chapter, I held several chairs in the Council.
I even ran for Regional N'siah! I went to one District convention
(June '71) and one International convention in Starlight PA.

I still get mail from the local council and an occasional newspaper
from the national organization. My father has been very active in
his BB lodge and knew/knows the folks involved in the national org.
(since we lived outside DC those folks were our neighbors)And my
dad still runs into the woman who ran Northern Region and keeps us
	all up to date.

Both of my sisters were in Dafna and my brother belonged to
Brandeis (# unknown, but the DC council chapter).

BBG was a very significant part of my teen years and helped me
grow up. I have many fond memories and hope other teens are having
as much fun in the organization today!

I had the honor of being in AZA in Kansas City (Mo-Kan Region of District 2)
from 1972-1976

I also had the dubious distiction of being in 3 chapters that folded while or
shortly after I was in them. I started in B'nai Juhuda AZA #621 which folded
after 2 years and then I moved to Albert Michelson AZA #224 (?) which folded and
then for my last year I was in AZA #2 (no name) which also folded

BTW... AZA #1 was in Omaha.

AZA and BBG were/are very big in Kansas City with the high point being about
5 years before I was in where there were 10 AZA and 11 BBG chapters in the city
each with 25-40 people in them.

I knew some folks from that area. I even went to a council dance at Montgomery
Mall -- 1968/69 -- and ended up being maced. DC cops were into
that in those days. Anyhow, if any names come to mind, I'll get
back to you. Do you remember when you were at Starlight?
