821.0. ""The Dybbuk" -- new release of the film" by ULTRA::OFSEVIT (card-carrying member) Fri Nov 03 1989 18:31

Last night I got to see the movie "The Dybbuk" (based on the famous
Yiddish play) at the West Newton (Mass.) Cinema. It was the last night
of an 8-day engagement, and judging by the full house (which I think
they got most of the week), it should not have been the last time it
will be possible to see the movie.

This is the 1937 Polish production, an excellent production,
restored to very good picture and sound (with new English subtitles)
after a painstaking search for existing prints. I can not urge you too
highly to see it if you get the chance.

Much appreciation to the various agencies and organizations that
made the restoration of the movie possible, and even more appreciation
to the West Newton Cinema for showing it. Among other things, it
proves that there is a real demand for this kind of classic movie,
    properly restored and presented.

It does hurt, to watch the outstanding performances, to know that
most of the people involved in the original production died within a
    few years.

My wife and I made the last (9:30pm) showing. I would make certain to
see it again when it comes around. The music (mainly Chassidic chants)
was haunting. The philosophical messages were profound.

I was also struck by the quality of the restoration. See it...***1/2

I've heard wonderful things about this film. If anyone hears of
another showing in the MA/NH area, please let the rest of us know.

    Thanks,

I notice in today's (4 December) Boston Globe, that "The Dybbuk"
is playing at the Coolidge Corner Cinema in Brookline, MA.

It's just a regular display ad, so I don't know how long the film will
    be there.

But, if you want to call the theater, the phone number is 617-734-2500.
