I guess I'll just have to increase my donation to the Dukakis campaign.

The base note has been deleted in keeping with the prohibition of
personal attacks. Hopefully, the author will clean it up and resubmit
it as the expression of a wide range of views is required for
    meaningful debate.

I'm going to have to access this conference more frequently, so
I get to read notes before they're deleted....

What was .0 upset about? Maybe the 7 or 8 Democratic state platform
committees that have endorsed a Palestinian state? I would think
he (she?) would love Dukakis, who wants to move the U.S. embassy
to Jerusalem. It's not at all clear to me that hard-line supporters
of Israel wouldn't be better off with Dukakis in office than with
Bush. I don't think Dukakis has a clue as to the Palestinian point
of view, or wants to have, either.

I read .0 very carefully and didn't find anything offensive or "wrong"
that would warrant deleting it. Maybe the Moderators should reconsider?

I'm curious too, can it be put back? (The dems are hardy folk,

Karen,

You are not the only democrat 8^{). And you are right we are hardy.
However, it was not the views but the manner of expressing them which
caused the objection. We must maintain a forum which will not be
closed (as SOAPBOX recently was). Therefore, we should strive to keep
a lid on the personal attacks, fighting words and promotion of illegal
activities.

If I may be so bold...

The note .0 alluded to a New York Times article referring to the
7 Democratic state conventions that endorsed the Jackson position
on the Middle east. That position calls for a two-state solution.

The note, however, went on to make very partisan statements that
tended to associate the party in general with that position. It
was written by a noter in New Jersey famous for lower case...

Soapbox was closed? I've never read it but heard a lot about it.
Would a short reply on what happened be out of order?

482.10a new SOAPBOX is openDELNI::GOLDSTEINResident curmudgeonTue Jun 28 1988 21:329
SOAPBOX was not "closed" (v.t.). Its owner, however, decided that
he didn't want to take responsibility for it and what it had become.
So he shut it down (without external pressure). In its stead, a
new SOAPBOX was created on DSSDEV, this time with rules and moderators
    who enforce them.

For more info, read either DSSDEV::SOAPBOX or the relevant topic
    in HUMAN::DIGITAL.

It's not really relevant, but one might draw tenuous parallels -- and
find significant differences -- between Soapbox and Bagels.

Put simply, Soapbox was a place of vigorous debate. A month or so ago,
it had become a place to taunt others, with notes discussing the best
way to kill liberals. One participant changed his personal name to
"Kill Commies." One of the participants decided that this was becoming
a disaster waiting to happen. He consulted with the host (on whose machine
Soapbox resided), and they shut it down. (There was no management involvement.)

About two or three days later, a "committee" was volunteered, and a new
Soapbox with very restrictive rules was opened. Those rules have been
simplified and relaxed somewhat, and the vigorous debate continues.

I started this note by saying one could draw tenuous parallels between
Soapbox and Bagels. There is vigorous debate here, too, primarily on the
political situation in Israel and on the relationship between Judaism and
Christianity. If the debate ever descends to the name calling that marked
the last days of the old Soapbox, or if any group of Dec employees is made to
feel unwelcome here, I wouldn't be suprised if someone takes the
responsibility to shut this notesfile down, too.
