93.0. "Burials" by UGOTIT::KRAWIECKI (Andy Krawiecki) Thu Mar 27 1986 13:33

Can anyone put me on to a reference book or a person who can tell
me about Jewish burial practices approx. 2000 yrs. ago? I'm interested
in finding just how a person was prepared for burial - what type
of spices, oils, etc. were used. Type of cloth, colors, length,
amount (i.e. more cloth or more elaborate cloths for the rich or
famous). The type of tombs, whether in the ground or above ground
or whatever. Thank you for whatever help you can give.

The laws of burial, like all other areas of Jewish law, are
extremely complex. There is a volume of the Talmud (I forget
which one) which deals exclusively with this subject. It was
written about 300 CE. Unfortunately, English translations are
not readily available. These translations are intended for
students and have Hebrew on one page and a very cryptic
translation on the facing page. When studying the Talmud you
will need a Rabbi or Talmud scholar to explain the text.

Your best bet would be to ask questions of an Orthodox or
Lubovitch (Chassidic) Rabbi. They usually study the Talmud as
         part of their daily routine.

    Andy,

A book written by Dr. (Rabbi) Norman Lamm (president of
Yeshiva University) called 'The Jewish Way in Death and Mourning'.
My in-laws have it, I'll check to see exactly what it covers
and let you know, but I think it should be right what you're
    	intersted in.

This sounds like UGOTIT::Krawiecki is checking up on the Shroud
of Turin. In any case, there were a lot of articles about the
shroud, and some of them might cite references from works which
would have information about burial practices of that era.

Re: .3 -- Dr. Lamm's book on Death and Mourning ---

This book is designed to be a practical guide to today's mourning
practices. In the Foreword, Dr. Lamm specifically states that the
book is not intended to be a scholarly work. It rarely cites
scriptural references. In short, it's probably not what you want.
