87.0. "Never again, no matter who they do it to" by SWATT::POLIKOFF () Mon Mar 24 1986 17:02

	I recently read that some groups want those people who have been
diagnosed as having AIDS to wear clearly recognizable identification.

		May I suggest a yellow six pointed star!!!!!!

87.1fear vs intentional assult?VAXWRK::BRAGINSKYThu Mar 27 1986 15:5813

    Hmm.. That is a very interesting issue. In my opinion, having people
    who have been diagnosed as having AIDS, to wear some sort of
    recognizable symbol is not quite the same as what germans did with
    jews. Although it has been proven (?) that AIDS cannot be contracted
    by simple physical contact, I can see that people may not fully
    believe the results of such research. I would feel sort of funny
    if I had to shake hands with an AIDS victim... Wouldn't you?
    Now, what germans did was quite different: the sid pointed star
    was a symbol of disrespect for Judaism...

87.2okay, how about a pink armband? (I second .0)DELNI::GOLDSTEINFred @226-7388Thu Mar 27 1986 16:2913
    The point alluded to in .0 is not that AIDS just might be spread
    via handshakes. That's pseudo-scientific absurdity (although the
    LaRouchies are pushing it). The point is that public attitudes
    that make that particular disease so much more feared than other
    deadly diseases are rooted in fear and loathing for the largest
    group of AIDS victims -- homosexuals.

    In Nazi Germany, homosexuals wore armbands and went to the camps,
    too.

    Quibbling that there may be quasi-medical bases to fear of AIDS
    victims does not change the underlying facts of the case. I second
    .0 as an appropriate response.
87.3Perfectly clearSWATT::POLIKOFFArnie PolikoffThu Mar 27 1986 19:193
	Let me make it perfectly clear. I am against official singling out any
segment of a population because if they get away with it they WILL single
out Jews again, and as I said 'Never again!'.

    	This is a diffidcult issue to conceive.

    	But let's put it this way, there ARE people
    	with AIDS that do not care about infecting others
    	you know.
