881.0. "Dublin to Cork, Sightseeing?" by FRAMBO::LIEBERMAN (Frankfurt ACT - Finance Industry) Thu Mar 28 1991 09:21

I am planning on visiting my sister in Cork in April. I have never
been to Ireland, and I will only have a few days to tour around.
My question is, should I plan on flying into Cork, and spending
my time in this area, or I could fly into Dublin, then drive to
Cork, and do some sightseeing along the way. I am told that the
drive is 6 hours, from Dublin to Cork, but I wonder if this is
    a scenic drive. (Castles, etc)

Antoher thought I have is to drive to the Galway area and explore
this. Is this a scenic area? I not sure I want to spend my time
touring the DEC facility, but it might be interesting.

    suggestions?
My total time in Ireland will be 5 days.

    thanks
    Pat L.

The best advice I can give you is to aviod Cork altogether. The place is full
of Corkmen, conmen and other undesirables.

Seriously though it really is up to you. There are lots of places to visit
in the Cork area. Also Kerry is only about an hours drive away. Lots of beaches
etc and lovely scenery.

Again there is lots to visit on a trip from Dublin to Cork. Cashel in particular
is quite nice. There is a marvellous pub (I could pass one of those) in a little
town called Abbeyleix which is about half way from Cork. Its called Morrisseys.
Abbeyleis also has a beautiful Gaerdns belonging to the DeVesci Family. They are
cousins of HRH QE2.

Kildare is also worth a visit with Japanese gardens National Stud and lots more
to See.

As to taking six hours to get from Dublin to Cork what are you driving. Dessie
Fitzgerald here can do it in 1 hour 40 minutes. Only someone as crazy as me
would get into the car with him though.

fwiw......fly to Cork and spend your time touring Cork/Kerry. The area
well justifies spending a few days exploring the outstanding scenery.
Galway is probably a bit far away (3 hours) unless you intend spending
a lot of time driving, however, it does justify a seperate trip! It,
like Cork, has outstanding scenery and friendly people!

Dublin on the other hand is a large city inhabited by some nice people,
    breweries, bowsies and gurriers.

    Mike.

Ignore what Mbr said about Cork and Corkmen, and drive from Dublin to
Cork. I took that route in '88 and made it from Dublin (Raheny) to
Skibbereen in 4.25 hours.

You might want to take a look at the prison in Portlaoise before you
excessively exceed the speed limit though! The Rock of Cashel is a must.
Definitely, spend some time in Cork City and see (and hear)'The Bells of
Shandon', visit the Old Market in Cornmarket Street, and the ambiance of
St. Patrick's Street.

Then head west towards Macroom and Bantry, and travel the Ring of Kerry
and the Dingle peninsula. Well worth the drive.

I'll be doing the same in June.

If you go to Kerry, there is a lovely beach and golf club overlooking
the beach. It is in a place called Barrow, just 8 miles outside
Tralee. When you get to Tralee, just follow the sign post to
Fenit, approx. 4 miles outside Tralee on the Fenit road, you will
see the sign post for the golf club, just follow the sign posts and
you will get there with no bother. The scenery is simply beautiful.
There is no shortage of B & B'S, also plenty of good pubs.

Thank you all for the information. At this point I don't know if I
will be going in May or June, but I decided to fly into Cork, and
advoid the big city of Dublin.

See note 495.17 about all the things you can do or see in Cork.

And as Pat Rushton advised, don't pay any attention to Mbr's note!

Mbr is a good example of what I've said before: there are only two
kinds of people in the world (and in Ireland for that fact!),

Those that hail from Cork, and those that wished they did! :->

Q: What is the first thing a Cork person does when he/she arrives in Dublin

A	Throw a stone in the Liffey.
If it floats - said person goes back to Cork.

Well Pat, to be honest, I think it best you avoid Dublin altogether,
its big, dirty, noisy, traffic congested, serious lack of pubs, and
for the time you have here not worth a day or two. Fly directly to
Cork, and head off west to West Cork and Kerry, some of the
beautifulest parts of Ireland. I'd hate to advise you what to do, I
mean half the fun in travel is discovery. Just wander at a leisurly
pace, you'd be amazed what you would find.

    Have fun....

<<and head off west to West Cork and Kerry...

...to the centre of the universe, Ballydehob!

There's a signpost near this village that exemplifies the Celtic way of think-
ing, that there are no straight lines in nature. On the signpost are two
direction indicators, both for Ballydehob and both for 5 miles in distance,
but in the opposite directions. So, you can go left or you can go right
and you'll still end up in Ballydehob after 5 miles. I like that; what goes
round, comes back.

One more day and I'll be in Dublin, heading for the best part of Ireland - Cork!

Oh, keVin, I will be flying OVER Clare. That's good enough, eh?

Joe, I'll hoist a pint in Bishopstown to you.

Paddy, my schedule has been screwed up so this time 'round I'll not be going
to Belfast.

Back on 25 June.
