702.0. "S.IRELAND FISHING" by SHAPES::FRAZERA () Thu Jan 18 1990 13:00

    I'm thinking of having a fishing holiday in southern Ireland in
    September of this year.

    Is there anybody out there who can give me any info. about where to go
    (for course fishing), accomodation, and/or package deals, or has
    accomodation to let and general info. about what fish to expect, baits
    and methods to use etc.?

    Tony (who has never been to the Emerald Isle).

    re: .0 See my note at 495.17. about general info. I think I might
    still have some numbers you can call to find out about fishing
    places in Cork - I'll try to find it an send it to you.

    Also, there is an 800 number for the Irish Tourist office (in NY).
    "Mr. Arts and Entertainment, Director" (a.k.a. keVin Burns) might
    have that for you. (Yo, Burnsie, give the good man the 800 number
    will ya?!!)

    They sent me a package last year when I was planning to go (but
    didn't) that was quite extensive of places to stay, what to see,
    places to fish, etc.

    Some of the other noters from Galway might be able to set you straight
    about that neck of the woods for fishing (and they might even fix
    you up with a Galway hooker! :^> )

    My own experience centers around Cork. The big fishing places around
    that way are Cork, Cobh, Crosshaven, and Kinsale.

    Good luck!

    	See note 187.24 for the info/telephone number.

    	If you want to rent a car, get an American Express Gold Card
    	(with a Gold Card you don't have to take the additional insurance)
        and they you can have Digitals Travel Agent (American Express)
        book the entire trip for you. :-)

    	Maybe "Huckellberry" Drotter could be your guide .... :-)

    	(Rumor has it that Joe used to go fishing using a "Dotted-Line"
         so that he could catch "Every-Other" fish.)

    You have been very fortunate in eliciting responses from the two
    preceding noters, who are the foremost authorities here abouts on
    such issues. Rest assured you are in good hands.

    There is an on-going dispute between the government and the
    fishing clubs, over licencing. The result has been that the clubs
    have imposed a ban on fishing. If they catch somebody fishing
    they can be quite nasty to them.

702.5IS THIS A FISHERMANS TALE?SHAPES::FRAZERAMon Jan 22 1990 08:4917
    Joe, keVin.

    Thanks for the replies. It seems that you have a fan in Dermot!!
    Just to set the record straight I'm based in the Crescent in
    Basingstoke, England - yes I'm an ENGLISH interloper to this Celtic
    notesfile ! Although, my surname is Frazer so my ancestors were
    Scottish.

    I was hoping to get some replies from over here from people who have
    been fishing in Ireland, but thanks for your interest.

    BTW re: .4 This is the first I've heard of this, are you serious ?
    I take the Angling Times and the Anglers Mail and I've not seen
    anything about this.

    Tony.

702.6The row continues...TRIBES::CREANGet Thatcher before she.....AAAARGH!!Mon Jan 22 1990 10:2412
    Re .4

    Yes, it is serious. The dispute is still going on. The government
    is now trying to get the clubs to agree to some sort of complicated
    compromise scheme.

    Last year there were lots of incidents, mainly assaults on water-
    bailiffs (who check anglers for licences). Also, fast motor boats
    were used to deliberately swamp dingies etc being used by anglers.

    Re.6

    Yes, you're right, I've done some checking and it seems they are close
    to some decision.

    The reason I was surprised was that I've spoken to several angling tour
    companies and they never mentioned anything. Surprise, surprise !!

    Tony.
702.8LIAM, WHERE ARE YOU ?SHAPES::FRAZERAWed Jan 24 1990 12:289
    Liam,

    Thanks for your suggestion, it will provide a useful source of
    information.

    I notice that you are in UCG. So am I - where are you as I can't find
    an ELF listing for you ?

    Tony.
702.9Not that UCG, nor the other one!EGAV01::FERRIELiam Ferrie - GalwayFri Jan 26 1990 07:129
     Tony,

     UCG must have got tagged to my mail message somewhere along
     the line. I am in Galway.

     Regards

     (For Galway noters, UCG is not the university but a location
     in Basingstoke!)
