540.0. "Boston 12th - 20th May ?" by IOSG::WDAVIES (Winton Davies 7-830-4188) Thu Mar 30 1989 10:48

    Hi All,

I've never read this conference, but am a celt (of sorts), coming
from Wales, but I don't take much notice of that - my knowledge of
Welsh is limited to 'Bore Da'.

Anyway, some of you may know me from the various other conferences
around. The reason I'm writing this is because I will be in Boston
between the 12th and 20th of May, and will be looking for things to
do, people to meet and drink to be drunk !

Any offers of events, live music etc going on round then welcome.

    Winton Davies aka Wanton Devious.

    Oh No Not Wanton!!!!!!!!!

Bring it on buddie, I'm sure we can get you hammered at least one
night. Just remember, if anyone asks you what party you are in
the ONLY correct answer is REPUBLICAN 8*). Now I'm sure you can
do it with enough practice. 8*).

    Winton,

Welcome to Boston! I look forward to meeting you in May.

Bring your latest copy of GRANTA, and we'll have a great discussion
about Gibraltar, (in bewteen rounds of Guinness, Bass, and/or Newcastle
Brown Ale!! - if you like).

Watchout for that Culbert fellow, a real Republican reprobate.
(Did you know that Paddy Culbert actually served as the model for Hogarth's
    The Rake's Progress?! :^)

You in the states now ?

I'll bring you a copy of Private Eye's investigation - very
interesting...also I'll bring some other stuff if they'll let me...;-)
(they'll want to know whether I'm a sw enginner lecturing on ALL-IN-1
or a travelling book salesman at immigration , the amount of stuff I
    want to bring people !)

Is Republican as in Bush or as in James Connolly ? Vive La Republique,
    Non a la Reine !

Sounds good! I look forward to exchanging information, (books,
    periodicals, pamphlets, articles, etc.)

Could you do me a favor?! I would love to see the British edition of
the Playboy interview with Gerry Adams, Danny Morrison, etc. (April,
1989 issue I believe). I understand that one whole page of the British
version was censored. I have the American issue, (uncensored) and I'd
love to compare them to see what the British government could possibly
consider so "sensitive" as to delete it. Should be very interesting.

BTW, are you familiar with the publication I mentioned earlier,
"Granta"? Not many people over here are.

Hopefully we'll be able to re-fill those empty suitcases of books
you're bringing, with books to take home with you! ;^)

re. Paddy Culbert, that's "Republican" as in Bush. Under the surface
though, I really think he's a Tory. But don't tell him I said so!

Granta is published by Penguin and is available in most decent
bookshops. The latest issue (it's a quarterly) has a scathing article
on the 'Gibraltar Incident'. Well worth reading. (Philistines should
also read on, the rest of that issue is very good!)

    Pat,

that's the one alright! Do ye get it Ireland too?? I'm surprised.
How about the Playboy article (April issue) interview w// Jerry
Adams? Just curious. Does Ireland censor books, magazines, and
    periodicals too?

Also, if an article of British origin is to be shipped out of England,
to a "foreign" country, say, Ireland, (no domestic consumption in
England), do they censor it too?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

    My, my. How Orwellian.

    Joe,
.7 reads like an American trying to do a poor impersonation
of Irish-English and ends with some Snakese. I think I preferred
you in your more natural, less contrived, pugnacious style of
    Euro-Forum days of old.

    Hello Wanton, butty

I'll be in the US from 8th-26th May and I already owe Mr Culbert
a pint of Liffey water on account of him beating me hands down in
a MAIL debate on the McBride Principles.

Maybe we can make it the same night - take four cans of Felinfoel
Double Dragon and we'll show them the difference between Bass and
    Beer.

Hi,

Winton proposed getting together for dinner (and then off for a beer) Tuesday
May 16 at 7:30. Since he mentioned Thai or Chinese food, I'm suggesting a
restaurant that is fairly new, so it isn't busy. (Also it's a 10 minute walk
from the Plough & Stars pub.). There isn't much time, so call or send mail
is there are problems with this. I'm assuming that spouses are welcome.

The Crystal Seafood Restaurant (Chinese)
460 Mass. Ave
617-576-1550

It's in Cambridge on the south side of Mass Ave. at the end of Central Square
near MIT. There is a city parking lot on Austin St.

A map and directions are below (simple but slow directions):

                                                          Washington Main St

If you are coming from Maynard, you can take:

~ Rt 2 South to the circle at the end where it meets Rt 16 (Alewife Parkway)
~ Take Alewife Parkway East toward Mass Ave. In the circle, exit to the
left (DO NOT pass next to the MBTA station.)
~ At the first light take a right onto Mass Ave. There is a Mobil station across
	the street.
~ Continue on Mass Ave through Harvard Square
~ When you pass the Coop and the news stand, curve first to the right and then
to the left so that you follow Linden St. at Wordsworth Bookstore.
~ After the Square, Linden will merge with traffic coming towards Harvard Sq.
~ Continue on Mass Ave till just before the fire station which is on your right.
~ Take a short left onto Main and then another left onto Washinton.
~ Take a left at the first intersection and a parking lot will be on your left.
	(I think it's free after 6 PM).

(This direction was chosen for the greatest ration of left tendencies. :-) )

If you are coming from New Hampshire, you can take:

~ Rt 3 south to 128.
~ 128 north to 93 south
~ 93 south to Sullivan Square (last exit before possible congestion at Tobin
	Bridge merge).
~ In exiting keep to the left. Contine to the circle at the old Schrafft's
	factory.
~ Go through the circle, parallel to the overhead highway on Rutherford Ave.
~ Continue to the light after Bunker Hill College where you take a right onto
Austin (different than in the map).
~ Follow Austin past the Museum of Science. It changes into Memorial Drive.
~ Continue on Memorial drive (do not take the underpass for the left lane).
~ Take a right on Mass Ave.
~ Continue on Mass Ave till just after the fire station which is on your left.
~ Take a sharp short right onto Main and then left onto Washinton.
~ Take a left at the first intersection and a parking lot will be on your left.
	(I think it's free after 6 PM).

A day late and a dollar short.....

Tonight is to short a notice for me. I have to serve the public
tonight, and I am in session today.... Any chance of getting together
some other time??????? Joe,keVin and myself would like to meet
Winton but being real busy we need more than 8 hours notice....

There are a couple places in the Lowell/Nashua area that may be
acceptable. I think there is also a Thai restaurant in the Nashua
area. I am open 17th and 18th nights for a drink.

(Wednesday) in Nashua, for those of us who cannot make it tomorrow
    evening?

BTW, are you still staying in Princeton????

The "elusive" Winton Davies has finally "beamed down" to the
planet's surface! Perhaps the quaffing of a few "frosty libations"
    is in order.
Winton indicates he is staying in the Cambridge, Mass. area,
and would like to meet fellow noters, Yanks, perhaps a even a Tory. :^)
He has asked me to place this note since he was going off to a meeting.

Perhaps a good place in the Boston area might be LORD BUNBURY'S
in Quincy Market/Fanueil Hall. Facing the 3 rows of buildings, with
Fanueil Hall behind you, it is located on the LEFT (just for you
Winton!), the last restaurant on the row.

What with Watney's and Guinness on draught, and Newcastle Brown
Ale, Bass, and John Courage in the bottle (no pun intended!),
it may be one of the few bars in Boston that may provide a touch
of home for such a distant traveller. As a proven Anglophile,
and a true believer in Thatcherism, I often frequent this establishment
to reaffirm my love for Maggie, raising a toast in her honor. :^)

Now if Winton will commit to a time, and post a surety bond that
he will in fact show up, then I say, let the good times roll!

    Anyone care to go?!

    Over to you, Winton.
