89.0. "Music - CDs" by VLNVAX::MDLYONS (Michael D. Lyons DTN 297-5911) Sat Oct 18 1986 14:11

I just got a copy of the new Green Linnet catalog, and they
    are offering 3 CDs!

This may sound strange, but I *think* it's these three releases:

    	Christy Moore: Ordinary Man
    	Christy Moore: Ride On
    	Moving Hearts: Moving Hearts

The bad news is the price: $19.50 each. They don't seem to
have their act together about selling the CDs. It isn't clear from
the catalog if it's really those three releases above, (but I'm
pretty sure I figured it out correctly). ...and the postage and
handling charges don't mention the CDs, - I assume it's the same
as the LPs, cassettes, etc. - $1.75 for the first, $0.35 for each
    additional item.

It'll probably be cheaper in the stores, if you can find them.

    The order numbers are:

CD 3301 - Christy Moore - Ordinary Man
CD 3302 - Christy Moore - Ride On
CD 3305 - Moving Hearts - Moving Hearts

...as mentioned elsewhere (I think) in this notes conference,
there are also several Alan Stivell recordings available on
    CD.

There's a related discussion going on in the PYRITE::CD notes
conference (KP7 to add it) in note 304.

Oh. Damn. There's a guy in my group who keeps telling me "you've
just GOT to buy a CD player!" (after 2 years, it gets tedious).
I keep telling him "Sure, and I will -- when I can get stuff from
Shanachie, Green Linnet, Flying Fish, Kicking Mule and Philo, on
CDs." Guess I should start saving my pennies?

    RE: .2 "esoteric labels"

That's precisely my objection to CDs. There are a lot of small
studios recording and pressing limited quantity records of a diverse
spectrum of ethnic and folk groups. The rush to the new technology
of CDs leaves anything other than the wide appeal mass production
pop stuff out of the market.

    re:.2

Well, Dick, it's been almost a year and a half. Have you gotten
    a CD player yet?

    re:.3

Well, the set up costs for a new technology are such that anything
that isn't guaranteed a large sale is likely to be left out. At
any rate, in the time since these previous notes, those costs have
been going down, and a number of small labels are putting out CD's.
I haven't seen anything from Kicking Mule yet (oh, for Caswell
Carnahan on CD I'd sell my soul!), but Green Linnet, Shanachie,
Rounder/Philo/Varrick/et al., Flying Fish, and others have been
putting out CD's. CD's are still out of reach of the really small
independents, but I don't think it'll be too long before the
medium is accessible to all. In fact, the compact disc could be
a great boon to folk music of all kinds in that it'll be a much
better archival medium for recordings than anything else currently
    available.

Anyways, here is a list of Celtic music I have on CD so far (I'm
    still working on more...):
