For those of you who may have the great fortune to be in the Great
White North, you can watch the match on TSN in any bar or hotel
and, for those of you who have cable at home, the same is true. Live
action at 3PM and repeated at midnight EDT.

At least we'll be rooting for the same team this time, keVin!

    So we are still in with a chance as there are no full points yet, tho
    Egypt appear much better than people thought and could have beaten
    Holland last night.

    I am sorry, but it escapes me what the football match Egypt-Netherlands
    has to do with Celtic culture.
    Isn't there any note on sports ?

765.10Celtic Culture = Football!CLADA::BENOWed Jun 13 1990 13:2512
    Anne,

    Football and dark beer (not necessarily in that order) IS Celtic
    culture. You would have to live here to understand. The World Cup is
    like the Super bowl and World series combined and then some! When
    Ireland scored their goal against England the collect screams of 3
    million Irish people (half coming from their local pubs) could be heard
    all over the land. Egypt & Netherlands are in the same group of four
    as Ireland and England and thus what they do is very important to
    deciding if Ireland goes on to the next round. But since you live
    in Belgium I'm somewhat confused as to your lack of knowledge of this
    all important event in Irish History!
765.11Thanks for the explanationBRS01::HENROTThu Jun 14 1990 14:478
    Re .10

    I humbly confess my sheer ignorance of football matters. Thanks
    to .10, and a bit more explanation my husband gave me (he DOES follow
    most of the matches on TV, to my great disappointment), I understand
    why that particular match was important to Ireland.

    soccer ball, litre bottle standing in front (wearing cap)...caption
    "Heraus".

Who would have believed it - its the World Cup quater final in ROMA on
Saturday against Italy and you know, we 'could' do it.

i was in Genoa last evening for the match and the fun and excitement was
something else. The place was packed with Irish and tickets were easily
available, tho expensive 50-60 punts-ish.

The scenes after the match were wild and the Italians loved it - the joined
in the fun, including the police who just laughed and shook hands with the
Irish.

    Those penalties gave heart attacks in the stands, tho I assume it was
    as bad on TV.

The fans have been so well behaved that they are the praise of Europe. Last
night the bars in Genoa opened after the match to allow the Irish to wet
their dry throats and see Italy beat Uraguay 2-1.

Also, all the TV commentators and press are giving loads of praise to the
Irish fans. Seemingly one Italian TV comentator said -

" We have had Global warming, Green house Effect" but nothing beats this
		"Green Shirt Effect", thats now sweeping Europe.

So folks, its looking good for St. Jack and I don't think that they have
found a pedestal high enough for Packie Bonner.

    So, ROMA, here we go again OLE !!

	Brilliant performance; a game against Italy in Rome is a great prize;
	my cousin's silver wedding do is on Saturday night so there will be
	some party although it might not be quite what she had in mind.

	I noticed that Packie Bonner blessed himself before each penalty,
	EXCEPT the one he saved ! (I'm not sure whether this is of any great
	theological significance) Mick McCarthy has also been outstanding and
	Paul McGrath has been probably the best midfield player in the
	competition. I hope the players treasure every moment of this since
	for the older ones it's likely to be their only finals and they've
	given everyone so much pleasure.

	Re .-1 Hey Gerry it was really 2-0 to Italy last night, but I
	understand how minor details like the score can get forgotten under
	the circumstances !

765.16we'll never walk alone !ULYSSE::COADYTue Jun 26 1990 19:2617

    2-0 thats right, you are correct, I wasn't seeing, let alone counting
    at that time last nite. There is no questions, the Irish fans are the
    best in world - Ill never forget last night.

    So Rome on Saturday and as one Irish guy said in a pub last night -

    "The Pope better be careful who he supports, Jack Charlton is far
    closer to God in the eyes of the Irish, so his position is no longer
    guaranteed"

    I reckon Rome on Saturday ( with or without a ticket ) will be fun.

    Can the Irish economy carry this ?
