Quoted from Sing Out magazine Summer 1984:

"'Kilkelly, Ireland' was culled from a series of correspondences
found in Peter Jones' parents' attic. It beautifully conveys the
hardship experienced when young men left their homes for the 'new
	world' never to return."
	=================================================================

"KILKELLY, IRELAND" .....	Words and Music by Peter Jones
    				Copyright 1983
Recorded by Moloney, O'Connell, & Keane
    				"Kilkelly", Green Linnet SIF 1072

Kilkelly, Ireland, Eighteen and Sixty,
My Dear and Loving Son, John
Your good friend the schoolmaster, Pat MacNamara's
So good as to write these words down.
Your brothers have all gone to find work in England,
The house is so empty and sad
The crop of potatoes is sorely infected,
A third to a-half of them bad.
And your sister Bridget, and Patrick O'Donnell
Are going to be married in June.
Your mother says not to work on the railroad,
And be sure to come on home soon.

Kilkelly, Ireland, Eighteen and Seventy,
My Dear and Loving Son John
Hello to your missus and to your four children,
May they grow healthy and strong.
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble,
I guess that he never will learn.
Because of the dampness, there's no turf to speak of,
And now there's nothing to burn.
Bridget is happy you named a child for her,
You know she's got six of her own.
You say you found work, but you don't say what kind,
Oh when you'll be comin' home.

Kilkelly, Ireland, Eighteen and Eighty.
Dear Michael and John, My Sons,
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news,
That your dear old mother passed on
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly,
Your brothers, and Bridget were there.
You don't have to worry, she died very quickly.
Remember her in your prayers.
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning.
With money, he's sure to buy land.
For the crop has been poor, and the people are selling,
At any price that they can.

Kilkelly Ireland, Eighteen and Ninety,
My Dear and Loving Son, John,
I suppose that I must be close-on to eighty,
It's thirty years, since you're gone.
Because of all of the money you've sent me,
I'm still living out on my own.
Michael has built himself a fine house,
And Bridget's daughters are grown.
And thank you for sending your family picture,
They're lovely young women and men.
You say that you might even come for a visit,
What joy to see you again.

Kilkelly, Ireland, Eighteen and Ninety-Two,
My Dear Brother John,
I'm sorry that I didn't write sooner
To tell you that Father passed-on.
He was living with Bridget, she says he was cheerful,
And healthy, right down to the end.
You should've seen him, playing with the grandchildren
Of Pat MacNamara your friend.
And we buried him alongside of Mother,
Down at Kilkelly Church Yard.
He was a strong and fiesty old man,
Considering his life was so hard.
And it's funny the way he kept talking about you,
He called for you at the end.
Oh, why don't you think about coming to visit,
We'd all love to see you again.

Note: Robbie had changed a few words here and there, some
because they were the wrong idiom for Ireland in the 19th
century, some because of the rhythm and meter of the song as he
wished to sing it. In no instance has any of the changes
affected the meaning or emotion of the song. The words I have
here are the original words, without any changes, and so they
differ slightly from the words recorded on "Kilkelly".

    Holly,

I think the trouble Michael may have gotten into was political in
    nature.

    The child was John's.

Also appearing with Moloney, O'Connell and Keane are:

Seamus Eagan and Eileen Ivers.

Robbie remarked on Friday last that all of the above are
All-Ireland Champs with the exception of himself. (Of course he
was a winner in the Kilkenny Beer Festival, if any of you are old
enough to remember it!)

This same line-up will be at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford
on Saturday, January 30th.

keVin et al:

The concert is a double bill: "Tommy Sands - Eileen Ivers and
Seamus Eagan". Robbie is a sort of surprise guest artist backing
up Eileen and Seamus as the guitar player they had originally
intended to play with cancelled. I'm sure that Robbie and Tommy
will be doing someting together but nothing formalized.

I'm looking forward to this concert...mainly because with a cast
like this anything can happen, and it'll probably be the whole
being greater than the sum of the parts (?)

Robbie felt a little uncomfortable with the over-exposure this
gives him in this area. He doesn't want the audience to get sick
of hearing him before the new album comes out (late Spring/early
Summer). I doubt if he would have pinch-hit (-played ?) for
anyone but these folks. They're good people and fantastic
musicians...and Tommy S. is absolutely a unique talent (for those
that don't know, Tommy wrote "There Were Roses".)

The concert is on April 23, at the Old Cambridge Baptist Church,
Parish Hall, Mass Ave., Cambridge.
