1096.0. "telecom WHAT" by BERN02::BYRNE () Thu Jul 09 1992 06:36

For the second time in a week I have heard the name Telecom Ireland.

I worked for the ex P+T for 5 years and it was always Telecom
Eireann. I've NEVER heard of Telecom Ireland.

Have they changed the name ???

No! But they've changed chairmen quite a bit in the last few months!!

Hmmm not sure. I too have heard of Telecomm Ireland and I think its a
spin off of Telecomm Eireann, working on International Business. I
read an article a few months ago where they had offices in USA and
    Japan.

I may be wrong ...... but I know I say it somewhere.

    Is Eireann <> Ireland ?

Maybe they're just using the English (language) equivalent of their
name. Nothing terribly wrong with that in a country that speaks
    English.

    Tony.

I also worked for Telecom Eireann for a while. I think that the use of
Telecom Ireland may be to avoid the confusion caused by "Eire" being
unknown to a large part of the world.

I remember we sent a request for information to a US company and
recieved a nice letter back regretting that they do not do business
with hostile countries. It was addressed to Telecom Iran in Dublin 2.

YEA, but if they don't use the name Eireann then noone will ever know
    what it means!!

So much for their public relations office!

Some time ago it was decided that when Telecom Eireann engaged
in international activities that they should call themselves
Telecom Ireland. It is not a new or a subsidiary company.

In addition to getting mail addressed to Telecom Iran, Dublin,
there have also been cases of Telecom Eireann, Tehran.

Pat O'Connell ! How are you this weather ?

Are you telling me that if you call me, you use Telecom Ireland's
network, but if you call Gerry you use Telecom Eireann's ? And they
said it was a monopoly !

    John.
