930.0. "Name that Dog!" by SUPER::ST_ONGE () Wed Jul 24 1991 11:48

Hi Folks,

We have just adopted a 2 yr old Welsh Corgi named 'Boots.'

We love him but we hate his name. My husband feels he should have a
Celtic name (funny, he didn't like my ideas of 'Fang' or 'Bruiser').

We need your creative assistance. Anyone have any bright ideas for
naming this handsome pooch?

Thank you,

Diane

Naming animals is an art to which I am greatly enamored.
My favorite American name is Wally for large family oriented
dogs such as golden retrievers or labradors. Medium sized
dogs deserve short male nicknames, such as Butch, and can also
be named after primary or secondary colors, such as Blacky.

When naming dogs after foreign languages one must be very careful.
Dogs have feelings too and can be embarassed and feel "outside the
pack" when given hard-to-pronounce names, names that can be
translated incorrectly, or names after fruits and vegetables.

    For a corgi - a high-spirited intelligent and attentive dog, I would
give him a short name with crisp consonents. A celtic name such as
Conor, Cormac, maybe Fergus, with the highest marks going to the
    name Cillian (like the beer)

    Sincerely,
     /
    Seoirse

    Diane,

Just wanted to say congratulations on the new family member. We missed
you at the party, but knew you were off in a more noble pursuit.

Of course you did miss KeVin pump up.....his Guinness that is :^)

Sadly, we are now without pooch...we had to put down our 13 1/2
year old dog last week...my heart will never mend.

930.7What's in a name?CSC32::LILLYWed Jul 24 1991 16:518
A dog that's already two years old has grown accustomed to the name
someone else gave him, whether you like it or not. I've been told by
our vet to leave well enough alone. You might try giving him a
nickname, but mainly you don't want to confuse him.

My goodness, I'd think I was in CANINE! Thanks everyone for the interesting
ideas. I'm sure they'll make for some lively discussion.

And Jen, sorry to hear about your pup. The older pets are really the special
ones. My condolences to you.

Sorry also that I missed your party....and KeVin's spectacular display ;^)

Cheers,

Diane

    How's about a real welsh dog's name?

my two suggestions are... 'mot' or 'pero'

they're like the generic dog's names in Welsh, a bit like 'rover' and
    'fido' are in english.

Huw Williams. (Who's Grandad's farm sheep dog used to be called 'Pero')
