1386.0. "Gaelic Football & Hurling on TV in New England" by ADISSW::SMYTH () Sun Jun 05 1994 19:35

The SportsChannel (Channel 25 on the decoder box in Merrimack, but
probably different elsewhere) are showing Highlights of the All-Ireland
GAA Championship, both Football and Hurling. It's the same show that
Channel 4 show in the UK. It's on Friday nights at 9PM for an hour.

Next week they're showing Down vs Derry from two weeks ago.
A cracker of a match by all accounts.

    Joe.

I wonder will they show the DUBLIN V WEXFORD Leinster hurling match
played on Sunday. This also was a cracker of a match (Heads were
cracked I mean). When the teams settled down to play hurling it was
    very good.

Well down are through..They beat Tyrone yesterday (football)

In Hurling offaly also knocked Wexford out to win Leinster and will go on
to meet Galway. Limerick will entertain Antrim in other semi-final

Went to see The Roscommon V galway match (all-ireland qtr final
hurling). Crazy game very one sided as might be expected). At one stage the
Referee had to appeal for a ball to play as every ball that went into
the crowd ..well always seemed to land in someones pocket!..in the
second half the cross bar fell down...More in pity for the roscommon
    forward line than anything else.

I was talking to one of the roscommon trainer after the match...he
blamed the pitch saying he made a tactical mistake during the week when
he called in a mower to cut the grass (its was 6 inches long...15cm).
He reckoned he should have ordered a few lorries of 10-10-20 fertilizer
to allow the grass to grow another few inches and they might have had a
    better chance. -) -) -)

Tipp lost to Cork in a close enough match (football again believe it or
    not).

Next Sunday Dublin play Meath....old scores to settle and lots of good
off the ball boxing matchs to look forward to

1386.4Leitrim for SamADISSW::SMYTHWed Jul 27 1994 12:469
Leitrim's first win since 1927. It was estimated that at least half the
county's population of 24,000 attended the game. Mayo scored a goal in
the first 5 minutes and failed to score again until the 63rd minute (7
minutes to go). Been a Mayo man myself, I can safely claim to be
    disappointed with this performance.

Well I hope Leitrim go all the way....

Alot of sly boots flying!... Dublin will now meet Leitrim in the
semi-final. Should be a Dublin win but they will have to improve

Real good win for the Offaly men against galway..6 points the margin in
the end..Offaly were excellent in defence and will be hard to beat in
    the final....

    Antrim..Antrim...lord help us...destroyed by Limerick...Not saying
Limerick were that good or bad..but Antrim were very weak....

Should be a good final though..Offaly and antrim..on 1st sunday of
    sept..

1386.7"Offaly" tough on Limerick!BRUMMY::BIOTEK::LONERGAN"Digital PC's it together?!"Mon Sep 05 1994 16:3423
Hey Mick, beat you to this......looking forward to the post Bab's era now.

Offaly defeated Limerick in the All-Ireland yesterday by 3-16 to 2-13.
It was one of the most incredible ever finale's to a final. With about 5
minutes left, Limerick were leading by 5 points and coasting it. Then Offaly
scored a goal from a free (should have been blocked IMO), followed about 30
seconds later with another goal from play and Limerick just collapsed. It
seemed like everytime the Offaly men took a pot at goal after that, it flew
over the bar, they tacked on about another 5 or so without reply.

Limerick had been the better team throughout but will be rueing the amount
of wasted opportunities they had..something around 20 or so wides. Also the
man they most required a good game from, Gary Kirby, was a shadow of the
player in the Munster campaign. Whatever, well done to Offaly..they surely
know the right time to strike and they've been waiting in the wings themselves
for a couple of years...perhaps Limerick wont have too long more to wait.

Galway beat Cork in the minor game 2-10 - 1-11. Both good games so no harm to
   hurlings cause.

    Sean..Hows the form!!

Yes indeed one hell of a match....some finish....You would almost feel
sorry for limerick hehehehehe...Ok actually its is sad..They been
munster men and all that...Some excellent scores throughout the game
They are erecting a big fence around North tipp to keep the offaly
folk out..we won't hear the end of it until next year..

Sean...talked to Kevin..he is sitting in Ballyvaughan at the moment
having a few pints..sends his regards to all here....starts a new
job next week...in excellent form.....Will be in dublin at the weekend

1386.9Score (and report would be nice) anyone?KIRKTN::JADAMSFri Oct 07 1994 19:0612

Could someone please tell me the score of the football final
(Dublin v Derry?) since I foolishly asked my wife to tape it when it
was on Ch4 a couple of weeks ago (the same night I think) and have a
great documentary on the lace doily making baboons of Outer Mongolia or
    something like that.
    		  Cheers,
    			John A.

PS. Apologies (not many) to those in the conference who only want
to see their own "side's" propoganda splashed all over this place, for
this all too brief intermission (I think you know who you are).

GAA. Hurling League hotting up...Kilkeeny had a good win over Tipp
yesterday in Thurles...2-12 to 1-10. Both teams are trying out some
new young players Though it as some of the "older:" guys ie DJ CArey
    who made the difference.

Galway beat Cork in the other main match. Galway captain been
interviewed after was asked about his "wounds"....ie a bit of his ear
was missing and seven stiches across his face...
    "only a little scratch"..he replied...

I got a prank phone call this morning - it was Christy Moore singing
Lisdoonvarna. Sounded like it was coming from Ireland too. There was
an echo and it was a bit scratchy.

I think it's that Burns fellow. Mick, if keVin is still staying with
you - I'd watch your phone bill. He's a real leprechaun when it comes
    to that Clare propaganda. ;v)

I went to a Dana concert down the Cape recently. Real interesting.
Has anyone ever been to a Dana concert?

Well not to worry - I spoke to keVin. He's alive and well and
at the moment in New Hampshire. He told me however that he is
looking forward to the semi-finals in Dublin. Anyone wishing
to sit with the Clare group should meet keVin at the Pillar at noon.

what the weather was like in Dublin?

Dana Book Report - by George Darcy
    ----------------

Dana (pronounced Daw-na) was born "Elizabeth Browne" up in
Derry City. She changed her name to "Dana" because her real
name had too many syllables. Dana is also a mythological name.
    It means "bold" in Gaeilge.

Dana is a pleasant singer. In fact, Dana won the Eurovision
song contest many years ago. Probably only the older people
    are aware of that.

Last month I took several friends to the Dana Concert
down on Cape Cod in a church. There we listened intently
of the rich sounds of Dana backup up by a casette player.
Afterwards we hugged and held hands, well some of us.
Many of my friends still speak glowingly of the Dana
concert. They must have had a real good time.

Next month's story is about our trip to a Red Sox game
and how my friend Kasey meets a girl from Revere.

1386.19What do you mean...older people??POLAR::LARKINTue Aug 15 1995 16:159
What a moving story, George. I'm almost in tears. I do however resemble
the remark about 'older people' remembering Dana winning the Eurovision
Song Contest. I remember it well...Snowdrops and Daffodils etc.. But
what has all of this got to do with 'Gaelic Football and Hurling on TV
in New England? Is she a footballer also. ;-)
