689.0. "Proposal for Scotland conference" by MARVIN::COCKBURN (Promoting International Unity) Thu Dec 07 1989 10:08

I posted this in the Great_Britain conference a few days ago and I'm posting
it here too for additional comment. A quick look through this conference
(and the introductory notice) reveals a very large Irish bias to this
conference. You could almost rename this the Irish conference ! The Scots
suffer(?) from being both Celts (appropriate to here) and British (appropriate
to the GB) conference. However, this conference is predominately Irish and
the GB conference has a large English bias (well England does have 10x
the Scottish population, and it is Digitals 'power base' in the UK).

Scotland is an important base for Digital, and with the chip fabrication
plant being built just outside Edinburgh, a lot of people may need info
on Scotland if they are thinking of relocating there soon. It would also seem
sensible to provide one place where people can look for information on
things Scottish rather than the FOUR places at present (this conference,
the GB conference, the UK_Digital conf and the Ayr conf). There is in
fact a separate company (Digital Scotland) operating there which has
little or no representation in any of these conferences.

what do people think of this idea and what do they think the scope of
the conference should be?

cheers,
	Craig.

Just a thought:

There seem to be two conferences broadly related to Scottish things -
namely this conference (with a fairly English bias) and the Celtic
culture conference (with a large Irish bias). Not really wanting to
ask the same question in two conferences, I was wondering whether it
would be an idea to establish a SCOTLAND conference. Then people
would only need to ask one question there instead of posting it in
two conferences. This conference could also cover topics related to
working for Digital Scotland (instead of asking these questions in
the Digital_UK conference or Ayr conference)

Whilst this may be seen as some as an act of 'electronic devolution'
it's my view that it would help promote the growing importance of
Digital in Scotland as well as reflecting the actual division which
Digital itself has chosen by having a Digital (Scotland) distinct
  from Digital (UK)

RE .0

I think it's quite a good idea. Not because I'd like to see a Scotish
conference but because I'd like to see an Irish conference 100%
devoted to matters Irish. There are times that I would like to ask
something about Ireland but it's nothing to do with CELTIC culture
and therefore of little value to people who read these notes for
cultural reasons only, so I don't enter anything.

If we had an Irish conference, my problem would be solved. !

Re .2: Tony, I disagree with your point. If you want a 100% Irish
conference, you must create one. If a Scotish one is created, this one
would still have to deal with Welsh, Cornish, Manx, Breton and Galician
topics as well as the Irish ones. What's more, there are Celtic topics
which are not specifically related to one Celtic area in particular,
where would you put them if this file turned 100% Irish?
The Irish are not the only Celts around, just the noisiest... ;^)

689.5No need for another notesfileFORTY2::DONOVANFri Dec 08 1989 09:4815
I agree with Denis, keep one notesfile where we can all stick
together and moan about the English !

I would love to learn more about the non-Irish Celtic cultures,
though I suspect Digital doesn't have a very big population of
Cape Breton Islanders or Manx ! The only problem I can think of
is that to some Scots the word 'Celtic' is an anathema (or an
enema or quite possibly anemone) in which case we're better off
	without them.

Yours in the spirit of pan-Celticism, pan-tomimicism and
	pan-demonium.

Well Craig it appears we are in the minority. I do however, agree with
you. I think a Scots Notesfile is a great idea!

Well, I seem to have some support here and some support in the GB
conference. The answer seems to be, let's try it and see if it works!

I'll investigate next week whether the system managers object to another
conference on Marvin, and hopefully it'll be on line shortly after that
if I get the go ahead from them.

One criticism which has been levelled is that some people would not be
sufficiently interested in a Scotland conference , even though they are
interested in Celtic or GB conferences as these have a wider scope. "I
don't want any more conferences in my notebook" has been one comment.
Well, such is life. I guess a Scotland conference is not likely to attract
quite so many readers as a GB or celtic conference but so long as there's
enough to keep it going, it'll suceed. Adding an extra conference when you
perhaps have 30 or so already is not such a big deal when there's plenty
tools going to help you monitor conferences automatically and/or by batch
(mail_vaxnotes, AVN etc). He who proposes, does in this company!

	thanks for the replies!
