669.0. "Upcoming Shows." by PENUTS::KSULLIVAN () Mon Oct 23 1989 13:24

Buttons and Bows (Jackie Daly, Seamus & Manus McGuire) are playing
in the Old Irish Alehouse, in Dedham, on Nov.14. This will be an
exelent show, traditional music at its best. If anyone hears of any
    other dates/shows, please post them.

On the punkier side of things, Gavin Friday (of Virgin Prunes),
with a backing band consisting mostly of musicians from the Tom Waits
band is playing at T T the Bear's in Cambridge on Nov 13th. Will also
be a good show, if that's your cup of tea.

Gary O'Brian (presently with Skylark) will be with Jackie & Co. for
this show. It is, unfortunately, the only show in the area. Definitely
    a must.

But, typical of Irish coordination, Dolores Keane will be at Necco
Place (part of the Channel, I think), on the same evening, Nov 14th.
I will have to check the paper again, to be certain, but I'm pretty
    sure.

Also, at the Old Irish Alehouse, in Dedham, on Nov. 21st, Noel Hill, and
on Nov. 28th Phil Cunningham (of Silly Wizard).

Is anybody interested in attending this "Sessiun" ???

The show will probably start around 9.00 but we could meet there
earlier in the evening and have dinner first. This might be our
last chance to get together before winter sets in .... :-)

John O'Reilly is coming all the way from Texas just so that he
join us for the best of Traditional Irish music.

It is advisable that we purchase tickets in advance, (Kevin Sullivan
is checking on the price) as this show is certain to be "Sold_Out".

The Alehouse is at the junction of Rt 1 and Rt 109 in Dedham.

Directions: Whereever you are to 128, exit for Rt 109 East.
Continue along that road to junction, with a gas station on your
right. Go left, Alehouse is about a mile on the right.
    You can't miss it!?!?!?!?!?

Sorry for the late response, but hopefully this will prevent some of you from
driving all over Dedham tonight. To get the the Irish Alehouse, follow 128 to
109 east (this is about about 1 mile south of the Rt 9 Rt 128 junction). Go
straight on 109 about 2 miles (you will have gone through 2 sets of traffic
lights). The Alehouse is on the right hand side immediately before the Charles
River and the intersection with Rt 1. It is also about 1/4 mile after a
miniture golf/driving range also on the right handside of 109 east, and just
past Moseley's

Have fun tonight!

Anyone who enjoys Irish folk music with a country tinge, keep an eye
and an ear out for Mick Hanley's "All I Remember", one of the strongest
releases I've heard in a long time. Some exelent material here such
as "Free To Run", "Past The Point Of Rescue" and "My Love Is In
America" (with Dolores Keane, sounds like her at least). Beautiful
    album!!!

(Sorry Gerry, I got your copy, but Mike says he's making you another).

Shane MacGowan and the Pogues have, for the forseeable future, parted
company. Health reasons again being the issue. Whether this time it's
permenant or not will remain to be seen. He will not be appearing on
the current tour. Joe Strummer, ex-Clash and occasional Pogue will be
    taking his place.

Shane has for sometime been doing only 40%-50% of the vocals with the
band, as much a case of the other members' ability and increased
confidince as necessity to cover for his outofhisheadness. By all
accounts he wasn't in great shape in Thurles, and he has always had
an aversion to (extensive) touring, especially at this side of the
Atlantic. Any which way, he'll be missed. But this will still be a
great show, different but just as good.

Rumour still prevails that the Sawdoctors are the support band.

Frankie Kennedy of Altan has just undergone emergency surgery in Dublin
to remove a malignant tumor from his spine. They have managed to remove
80% but are now trying to figure out how to get the remaining tissue.

Mairead (his wife) has stayed with him, but the remaining members are
playing a show in Portsmouth NH., this Thursday night, June 18th.

This is now to be a BENEFIT for Frankie and Mairead as they will
obviously be out of circulation for the forseeable future.

Altan without these two isn't really Altan, but there is a possibility/
probability (not finalized) that Sharon Shannon will play with them for
this show. They are awaiting confirmation from Altan's management.

For ticket reservation/information (and I presume any donations)
    call (603) 436-1031.

The Harbour Bar, on the Dock Road in Galway is owned by Dolores Keane.
It was a rough drinking establishment before her takeover because it
has an early morning licence which allows drinking to be done at all
    hours.

This not only allows the legitimate workers of odd hours to drink but
also the heavy drinkers of the city as well. Not a place to bring your
friends if you want to impress them.

Thats right Martin, I wonder where Mike is now, I think he stuck with
the Hi-Tech business, maybe still sells the odd old ewe from an Avis
car ............. jeez thats a long time ago; good memory.

Harbour Bar wasn't really rough, just happened that some of the locals
had strong opinions on many topics, particulary at 6am.

Gerry,

Last I heard he was in Holland contracting. He used even work for DEC once in
a while. Unless he has changed (some hope) he is probably a well known figure in
Amsterdam by now

We had a flat across the road from it in 1975/76, enter/exit by front
window. It was known as Sailor's then. A great place for afterhours, cider,
drinks on the slate, darts and the odd session with Mickey Finn & Co.

It was never as rough as it's reputation would have you believe, but
successfully kept the riff-raff yuppie types away.

669.60agreed; it was OK - especially at 6am.CTHQ::COADYWed Feb 03 1993 15:1511

I agree, all one needed was to look like a sailor or a hippie and look
like you could handle a few drinks ( well 15-20 pints in one sitting)
and you were fine. Also this helped asa useful anasthetic (sp) just
in case a "local" decided the bar stool should be welded to your head.

On Mike -jeez he would pick Amsterdam, no sheep there, but I'm sure he
    checks out the hoggets.

The Chicago super station WGN cable cast a program at 12:30AM this
morning, entitled "The Gentle Gunman". It was released in 1952 with
John Mills and Dirk Bogarde. Unfortunately, I can't receive this
station. Does anyone know of a video copy, for sale or rent?

The story line is about "an Irish revolutionary who reconsiders his
terrorist activities". It's a drama, not a comedy.
