701.0. "Transportation: Ireland <-> Scotland?" by SX4GTO::BERNARD (Dave from Cleveland) Wed Jan 17 1990 20:31

I was wondering whether anyone had any pointers on the best cheap way
to travel between Ireland and Britain (preferably Scotland).

Is the ferry nice? How does the price compare with flying? Is a
    boat/train available?

I'd like to hire a car in both countries- is it difficult to hire it once
and ship it back and forth via ferry? Or am I better off just renting a
car separately, once in each of the countries?

I've also cross-posted my questions in the new Scotland conference.

To go between Scotland and Ireland you can go Larne-Stranraer on the
ferry. The boat is ok and the fare is #150stg for two passengers and
the car. To fly between Dublin and Edinburgh/Glasgow is only about #70
return so I would suggest you fly between both and hire a car in both
    places independently.

I heard recently that the Holyhead to Dun Laoghaire car ferry
    is to be terminated.

Not sure about that...but just last week the Dublin-Liverpool
ferry service was discontinued just last week.
