Another sort of pirate is Radio Dublin in Ireland. They are illegal as
far as the government in Ireland is concerned. However they still operate
almost 24 hrs a day, seven days a week (unlike other pirates who are on
for a few hours and vanish).

They do verify reports with a QSL card and sticker. Best time is evenings
in Eastern USA. Frequency is 6910 khz.

Subj:	Campaign for Irish Radio station in London

All,
I was at a meeting of the London branch of the Celtic league last
night and there I found out about a campaign to get an Irish radio
station going in London. Clearly, this is provides an opportunity for
Irish language to be broadcast in the area, and may also be a forum
for other Celtic communities to get airtime.

There's a 2/3 page article on this campaign on P8 of "Irish in
Britain news", 19-Jul-91.

The aim is to give the temporary "Irish Festival Radio" station a
full licence, and to extend it's broadcasting area to the whole
of London, perhaps beyond.

A follow up article in the paper on 26th July said:

"1,000 plus sign media petition

Over 1,300 people signed the Irish media group's petition at the
Southwark (London) Irish festival calling for a fair share of media
time for the transmission of Irish music, sport, culture and current
affairs in the UK.

With 74 MP's and 29 MEP's having already signed, this brings the
total to more than 21,000 signatures"
83.2RTE comes to Boston??TUXEDO::FARRELLJacqueline (Proulx) FarrellWed Mar 22 1995 12:139

Does anyone know of/have information about the Irish-only TV
station now available in Boston. I don't have much information
on it. I was told it's only available by cable in Boston and
Brookline. Apparently, they air some RTE programs. I'm not sure
    what else.

83.3Is it Celticvision or Kelticvision?TALLIS::DARCYAlpha Migration ToolsWed Mar 22 1995 14:1317
Apparently, you're talking about Celticvision (and they want you to
pronounce it with a hard 'C' !?!?!) which was started by some ex-rock
    and roll guy.

It's only in Boston and Brookline now but they hope (hope is the key
word here) that other cable systems will offer it in the coming year.

They have 2 6 hour slots of programming from 12 noon to 12 midnight and
include programming from BBC, RTE, & Ulster.

I guess if you want it on your cable system, you would have to lobby
your local provider, which is not a trivial matter in these
home-shopping network days of the blue zirconian diamond.

    Ciao!

Well, IMHO it should be pronounced Keltik.

If it's pronounced "Seltik" it's a soccer team from Glasgow :-)

Actually, there's no letter "k" in Irish or Welsh so the "c" is ALWAYS
pronounced "k" ("ch" is a different letter).

83.5Who needs K anyway? TALLIS::DARCYAlpha Migration ToolsWed Mar 22 1995 15:0217
    Hi Dave,

True, I've noticed that all imported English words starting with soft
"c" immediately get changed to "s" in Irish.

In my American dictionary "celtic" pronunciation is listed with both
hard and soft "c", though the hard "c" is listed first, and hence
probably preferred. The age old "celtic" debate... :v)

p.s. As an aside - I was talking to a friend the other day about the
"Troubles", no not of Northern Ireland, but instead of the Gay and
Lesbian parade problems in Boston. It's nice to know that maybe someday
that T word will go away, or at least migrate somewhere else ...
not that we want it here in Boston ... ;v)

    Rathole:

Does my memoty play me false or is the Italian for "cigarettes"
    actually "sigaretti" ?

    (Sorry, I meant memory!!!)

Has anyone been watching this station? Any idea what shows from RTE
    they actually air?

The Keltic Krust people mentioned that it was basically the Late Late
and Glenroe! I wanted to see if there is any current affairs kind of
    stuff.

Anyone out there got it at the moment and could tape something if
    needed.

Is Radio Dublin still broadcasting ? (still with a 'pirate status' ?)
On which frequence(s)/schedule (for Europe) ?
I listened at 6910 khz but was some disappointed by hearing the BBC sign...

thanks,
mauro
