So what do the Pats fans think about losing Parcels to the Jets?

And what do the Jets fans (if any) think about giving up a zillion
    draft picks for one coach?

    Jay,

Well, considering the compensation, I really have no problem with it.
Parcells is a great coach (problem is, HE KNOWS IT!), but he never
had "total control" in his contract, so it is not like Kraft violated
his contract with the assignment of Bobby Grier as personnel director.
The Tuna correctly assumes he has proven himself in this league, and
he wants that absolute power, plus he wanted to go home.

Anyways, I guess the bottom line on this whole fiasco is this:
    everyone won:

1st - The Jets got their man (until he decides he wants to be somewhere
else, which may or may not happen.

2nd - The commissioner stepped up to the plate and resolved the issue.
Parcells coaching in NY is good for the NFL, and Taglibue got
him there. I was very worried that this would turn football into
a shadow of major league baseball where the commisioner has no
authority to do anything....technically they do not even have a
commish and the sad state of pro baseball is due largely to this.
The Parcells/Kraft compromise had Pete Rozelle written all over
it, and Tagliabue said if you guys can't reach an agreement, then
I'm going to tell you how it's going to be and you will except
that......credit both owners for letting him settle it because we
all know there's nothing worse than going to court in the NFL.

3rd - I love what the Pats got and that is what is most important for
me. Some of the local media (Jay, I assume you're in Canada from
your node) think the Pats should've got a second this year
instead (#31 overall). That would've been better but now the
have picks #29,59,61,89,91 &119......six picks in the first 120.
The third and fourth rounds have produced some NFL stars. C.
Martin for one, Dave Wolabaugh (not a star) is starting for the
Pats. Terrell Davis was a 6th round pick...so the possibility
exists that they can get some immediate contributions.

Next year the Pats will have a 1st round pick and 2 seconds.

Year after will be two firsts, and there is no guarantee the Jets
will be 12-4 that year, they could just as easily be 4-12 and
that will be one valuable pick! I'll be rooting against the Jets
    	  for that very reason.

I've rambled on-and-on enough here, but that's my general take on the
situation. Personally, I think the Jets gave up too much, but it was
not really their choice....for their sake, I hope Peyton Manning does
not end up like Jeff George (or if they take Pace, have him end up like
    Tony Mandarich!)

    	As usual, FWIW.

538.4IMHO-It's got nothing to do with footballFABSIX::J_BALDINOThu Feb 13 1997 07:1215

I read an article about Parcelles in a New York paper over the
weekend about Bills growing in that NY/NJ neighborhood and wanting
to eventualy some day be able to settle down somewhere on the Jersey
shore. There was a picture of his new house and neighborhood and he was
quoted as saying " I've waited 45 years to live on the Jersey Shore".
I think under all the BS about absolute power and control, his motive
may have just been his oppertunity to fulfil his dream to live where
he's always wanted to. We all have that dream, but few ever get their
oppertunity,I think this is all about that. I like Bill and will miss
the crap he used to give the press,it was the most entertaining part of
    the game!

538.5So What Would That Make Parcells???YIELD::BARBIERISun Feb 16 1997 18:596
Yeah, BUT if it has nothing to do with football, Parcells is
      quite a liar.

      I hope otherwise.
