317.0. "failover works, shadowset breaks" by PTOVAX::PEARLMAN () Mon Feb 10 1997 10:20

    A customer running OpenVMS 5.5-2 is using host based shadowing across a
    mixed architecture cluster. The disks are connected to HSJ's.
    For sake of discussion the shadow set has two members each connected
    to two different controllers. Each controller is a HSJ40 pair. When a
    controller fails, the customer notices the load being moved to the
    other HSJ in the controller shelf but the shadow set is broken. It
    not is only broken but needs to be rejoined manually and then the copy
    must occur.

    Is this normal behavior?

    This is expected behavior of OpenVMS volume shadowing. If a member of a
    shadow set fails, it is removed. A copy operation is necessary to add
    the member back into the set. This is to guarantee that all members are
    equal mirrors of each other.

    Btw. this conference is for RAID Software on OpenVMS only.
    Discussions about shadowing are better covered in VAXAXP::VMSNOTES or
    CSSE32::CLUSTER.
