866.0. "Maybe battery problem??" by BARNA::DSMAIL () Wed May 07 1997 13:39

I've the following problem with an HSZ40,V3.0Z-3, working in dual redundance:

Suddenly it stops, giving a last failure code 02D72390
We've changed the battery (these are the second ones we've tested), the cache
module and the HSZ40 controller and it still stops with the same problem.
This is the information we have:
HSZ7B> show this
Controller:
        HSZ40 ZG54302518 Firmware V30Z-3, Hardware  B02
        Not configured for dual-redundancy
            Controller misconfigured -- other controller present
        SCSI address 6
        Time: 07-MAY-1997 16:27:02
Host port:
        SCSI target(s) (0, 1, 2, 3)
        TRANSFER_RATE_REQUESTED = 10MHZ
Cache:
        32 megabyte write cache, version 2
        Cache is GOOD
        Battery is LOW
        Unflushed data in cache
        CACHE_FLUSH_TIMER = 30 (seconds)
        CACHE_POLICY = A
        Host Functionality Mode = A

All of this points to a battery problem but as I've told you, we've
already changed twice, so does anybody know what isn't right??,
maybe the firmware card???, this is the only thing remaining!!

Thanks in advanced,

Clara Coronas

866.1What are the date codes of the batteries?SSDEVO::RMCLEANWed May 07 1997 14:1310
  What are the dates on the batteries you have tried here. This is a
very critical question.

  The firmware card should be ok because it won't boot if there is something
wrong with it. You might try and get a V3.1 card because that has different
battery code which is better at the determination of the battery state.

  Have you tried a complete swap of the two controllers to see if there might
be a backplane problem? If this were so then the problem would stay
with the specific slot.

Hi,

I'm going to answer all your questions and explain what we've done:

1. Battery date
As I've told you, we've changed the batteries twice, the dates are:
	7.96
	4.96
	9.96 (This are the last ones, that are installed now!!)
I want to know why this is so critical, is there any rule we have to know or
any list about battery dates??, in December we had many problems with
battery (we have 5 dual-redundant HSZ40 (total of 10) working 24 hours per day)
and we are worry about!!

2.About firmware cards we are planning of changing them (we have 5 dual-
redundant HSZ40 (total of 10) working 24 hours per day) in a mantenance
week-end (the first of July).

3.About the swap, we 've been able of doing the tests this morning, and this
is what we have done:
- Put the correct batteries in the wrong HSZ40, and they show as battery low,
  when they are really a good ones.
- Swap only the HSZ40 controller (in the wrong one), and we've also the same
  problem.
- Finally we have change the two modules: cache + controller and all works
  fine.
So, the conclusion is that there's no problem with backplane but we have a
problem with CACHE. Now we've asked for a new cache and I suposse we'll
get it in two hours.
The CACHE module has arrived and now we're testing the access to the disks
and it seems to work fine!! I cannot believe, it's the second CACHE we've
chaged...

Thanks you very much for your quick answer, I'm waiting for your comments about
Battery dates,

Clara Coronas

    Your batteries all show a date code of 1996, get some batteries that
    show date code of 97 stamped on the battery case.
